Saint Etienne's "Only Love Can Break Your Heart", a slow motion, dubbed up & smoked out cover of a song from Neil Young's seminal 1970 album "After The Goldrush", was the second single to be released on the fledgling Heavenly Records, but, in most ways, was people's first point of contact with the label.
Saint Etienne's first album, "Foxbase Alpha", was released in October 1991, preceded by a re-issue of "Only Love Can Break Your Heart", which was the band's first Top 40 single.
Heavenly's association with Saint Etienne carries on still - the band are managed by Heavenly co-founder Martin Kelly and a double CD compilation featuring the best recordings from the Heavenly era, "Smash The System", was released in the Autumn of 2001.

James in London says that Saint Etienne’s sound is “that film moment (usually in slo-mo) when the girl turns her head and opens her eyes”.
Bob Stanley became a music journalist for a while; it was then that two things came together to push him into starting his own band:
Stanley and Wiggs have always had a knack for being just ahead of the curve with their sound and have always created pop tunes that are perfect examples of their craft.

Pete Wiggs, Bob Stanley, and Cracknell have an archivist's love of that sound, of the whole look and feel of early-'60s British pop culture, but their approach has never been purist.
Not for Saint Etienne the archivist's insistence that nothing new can be any good, and not the archivist's elitism, either.
Wiggs and Stanley are still stationed behind their synths, but they've been augmented by a full-fledged band including keyboards and horns, and -- best of all -- terrific piano accompaniment from Gerard Johnson.
