While Sweikert made his final pit stop on Lap 133, Art Cross and Don Freeland moved into 1st and 2nd place.
Sweikert led with half a lap over Freeland, until Lap 178 when Freeland's transmission failed.

Sweikert was a 5-time veteran of the Indianapolis 500, winning the classic in 1955, an event marred by the death of Bill Vukovich, Sr., who was killed in a crash while leading and attempting to lap cars at the rear of the field.
Sweikert was also the AAA 1955 "big car" racing champion and finished 6th in the 1956 Indianapolis 500.
He is considered one of several victims of the "Sports Illustrated Jinx." After appearing on the cover of the 5/28/56 issue, he was killed soon thereafter during a sprint car race at the Salem, Indiana, Speedway.

Kurtis continued to refine his designs, and in 1955 the series culminated in the cigar-shaped KK500C/D. On the KK500C, the offset engine could be mounted vertically or tilted 36 degrees right, while a KK500D was a "C" with provision for power steering.
Bob Sweikert, in a KK500D, won the 1955 Indy 500 which was overshadowed by Vukovich's fatal accident.
Sweikert's crew chief, A.J. Watson, Jr., improved Kurtis' design to build a Watson Roadster that outran all the Kurtis racers at the 1956 Indy 500.

The victories by Sweikert, Flaherty, Larson and Rathmann came with A.J. Watson as chief mechanic, while the victories of Ruby and McElreath were wrenched by Denny Moore.

Young Bob got his first job at the track as a “stooge” in 1957 when his father was crew chief as Don Edmunds earned Rookie of the Year honors.
The next year Bob Laycock, who had taken over the media room operations at the track from Snappy Ford in 1952, decided to increase his May staff.
In the film, he is seen walking with Johnny Rutherford up to Newman in the garage area and greeting him and later again approaching Newman and talking to him the day after he supposedly won the race.

Zink, who was inducted into the Auto Racing Hall of Fame last May, died Saturday at a hospital in his hometown of Tulsa, Okla., the Indianapolis Motor Speedway said Monday.
Zink had at least one car in the Indianapolis 500 each year from 1952-67, winning in 1955 with driver Bob Sweikert and 1956 with Pat Flaherty.
Aside from Sweikert and Flaherty, his drivers included Jimmy Reece, Jerry Hoyt, Gene Hartley, Troy Ruttman, Jud Larson, Ed Elisian, Bob Veith, Lloyd Ruby, Jack Brabham and Jim McElreath.

In June 1956, Bob Sweikert was fatally injured during a sprint car race in Salem Indiana.

“Elisian was later accused of causing the death of popular 1955 Indianapolis 500 winner, defending AAA champion and Midwest Sprint Car champion Bob Sweikert during a 1956 sprint car race at Salem, Indiana.
Just wanted to point out that Bob Sweikert won the Indy 500 in 1955, not 1956.

Somewhat following in the footsteps of his father, John S. Zink Sr., who had sponsored a car driven by Cecil Green in 1950 and 1951, Jack Zink arrived with his operation in 1952 and with a driver even younger than himself - 22-year-old Jimmy Reece.
John Zink Specials won 13 National Championship races between 1955 and 1966, four each with Jud Larson and Jim McElreath, two each with Sweikert and Flaherty, and one with Lloyd Ruby.

The first thing that comes to mind, when I think of Salem Speedway, is danger.
1955 "Indianapolis 500" winner Bob Sweikert was killed, in early June 1956, in a USAC Sprint race, at Salem.
Rich Vogler was killed, on the final lap of a race, in which he was declared the winner, during an ESPN Thunder telecast, in July 1990.

My grandfather Charles W. Yount informed me that Bob Sweikert, the previous year's "500" winner, had been killed earlier in the day.
I watched Bob Sweikert finish sixth in the golden yellow D-A Lubricants Special number 1 Kuzma - Offy roadster in the 1956 "500." Less than three weeks later the 1955 "500" winner was gone from this world.
Each day was mostly a game for adolescent, chubby Bob Jennings as I made my way through year fifteen and laughed with my pals while we listened to each other's farts, the louder and smellier the better.
