Bobby Byrd - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bobby Byrd (born Bobby Day on August 15, 1934) is an African American funk/soul/RandB/gospel musician, best known as James Brown's longtime sideman and co-vocalist.
Byrd also produced a slew of solo funk tracks which have been sampled by, among others, Public Enemy, Ice Cube, LL Cool J and A Tribe Called Quest.
Byrd was leader of a group called The Avons when Brown joined in the mid-1950s.

 Byrd / Not A Byrd
Byrds buffs may remember that when the band first visited England, they were served with an injunction by a British RandB combo called "The Birds." The Birds released four singles on Decca between 1964 and 1966 before breaking up.
Joe Byrd was a student of "serious" music who dropped out of UCLA in the mid-'60s to organize "happenings." With the Field Hippies, he released The American Metaphysical Circus (Columbia, 1969), an album that fused rock with experimental electronic music.
Byrd, born in 1917, had played in various square dance bands from his teens, and once he entered politics, he used his fiddling skills to attract attention and win votes.

Born Robert James Byrd Snr, (making him, ironically because of his biggest hit, Bobby Byrd - not to be confused with the funk musician of the same name), in Fort Worth, Texas, he moved to Los Angeles, California at the age of fifteen.
Bobby Day's best known songwriting efforts were "Over and Over" made popular by the Dave Clark Five in 1965 and "Little Bitty Pretty One" popularized by Thurston Harris in 1957, Clyde McPhatter in 1962 and the Jackson Five in 1972.
Bobby Day died of cancer in 1990 and was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California.

BOBBY BYRD - BOBBY BYRD GOT SOUL: THE BEST OF...
It was Byrd and Byrd alone who persuaded his family to sponsor Brown's parole from the Georgia penal system in 1952, rescuing the troubled but talented singer from a life of bad breaks by launching his music career.
Unfortunately, Byrd never received the proper recognition he was due (he remains uncredited on many of the 40+ James Brown hits he helped pen), explaining why he's largely remembered as just another James Brown sideman.
Byrd's promising solo career never materialized, and the singer released a few singles before sinking into obscurity (though he continued to tour, particularly in Europe).

Indeed, without Byrd, James Brown may have never made it out of Georgia: in the early '50s, Byrd and his family sponsored Brown's parole from prison, and Byrd gave Brown a spot in his vocal group, the Flames (which, of course, Brown eventually took over and relegated to the background).
After splitting from Brown in 1973, Byrd recorded sporadically and performed often (particularly in Europe), releasing On the Move in 1994.

Bio: As a long-running right-hand man, Bobby Byrd performed an invaluable function in the James Brown Show, warming up the crowds as a solo singer, then retreating to the sidelines as a member of the Famous Flames, Brown's backup vocal group.
Like many of Brown's close associates and support musicians, Byrd got a chance to record his own records under Brown's direction, releasing numerous Brown-produced singles between the early '60s and early '70s.
The unfortunate problem was that Byrd was an average, even nondescript soul singer, sounding much more like a poor person's Sam & Dave than a facsimile of Soul Brother Number One.

Often called "the Godfather's Godfather," Bobby Byrd found the young James Brown a home and a job so he could get out of doing time in a juvenile detention center, then served as his bandleader and arranger until 1970.
Not only that, but Byrd wrote more than 40 of Brown's biggest hits, including "Sex Machine," "Talkin' Loud and Sayin' Nothing," and "I Know You Got Soul." Unfortunately, Byrd never received proper credit for much of his work, which is why he remains a relative unknown to this day.
That year, the urban contemporary market was inundated with faceless artists who made a point of sounding as contrived and generic as possible in order to appeal to R&B...
