Petrino spent 1994 at the University of Nevada as both the Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks coach.
Petrino coached at his alma mater, Carroll College, from 1985 to 1986, serving as the Offensive Coordinator for a team that had the top-rated offense in NAIA football in each season.

Petrino grew up in Helena, Montana and graduated from Carroll College with degrees in math and physical education in 1983.
In 2002, Petrino returned to the college ranks as offensive coordinator at Auburn, whose offense significantly improved its position in the Division I-A rankings in that season.
