The Bobonaro district (Portuguese: Distrito Bobonaro) is one of 13 administrative districts within the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste commonly known as East Timor.
The Savu Sea lies to the north of Bobonaro.
In addition to the official languages of Tetum and Portuguese, a large part of Bobonaro speaks the Malayo-Polynesian languages Bunak and Kemak, which are designated "national languages" by the constitution.

The problem, says a priest who is trying to mediate an end to the violence, is that the Timorese police learned their methods from their former masters: the Indonesian authorities who ruled East Timor with an iron fist for 24 years.
Their Bobonaro supporters, about 350 clansfolk in two villages outside town, meet the priest's description - they are mostly old people, women and children, all poor.

In the first Bobonaro indictment, issued on 11 June, three militia members were charged with 13 counts of crimes against humanity, including rape and torture, for their alleged involvement in a widespread or systematic attack against the civilian population over the course of 1999.
The indictment further alleges that one aspect of their attack was the abduction, beating and/or rape of women suspected to support independence, or of women whose husbands were suspected of supporting independence or being supporters of the independence group FALINTIL.
The second Bobonaro indictment, issued on 21 June, charges 10 individuals with one count of murder and one count torture for the killing of two employees of the UN Mission in East Timor (UNAMET) on 2 September 1999 in the village of Raifun.

The Acting Deputy General Prosecutor for Serious Crimes filed a major crimes against humanity indictment at the Special Panel for Serious Crimes at Dili District Court in Timor Leste at 15.00 on 10 July 2003.

Now, there are about seven thousand people that live in the area.
