Bobov originated with Rabbi Shlomo Halberstam in the Galician village of Bobowa, where the bulk of his Hasidim were originally followers of his grandfather, Rabbi Chaim of Sanz, known as the Rabbi of Sanz, or by the name of his books the Divrei Chaim.
It has been noted that his date of death was on the same date of Aaron the Cohen, mentioned in the Torah, which his son Rabbi Benzion Halberstam interpreted as being due to their similar characteristic of "loving peace".

Rabbi Ben Zion's group is headquartered in the main Bobov synagogue on 48th street in the Boro Park Section of Brooklyn, and Rabbi Mordecai David's group is headquartered three blocks away on 45th street.

NEW YORK -- Grand Rabbi Naftuli Halberstam, who took over as head of the Bobov Hasidic sect after the death of his father five years ago, died in Brooklyn Wednesday at age 74.
Rabbi Halberstam became head of the sect, which has its roots in the town of Bobova, in what is now southern Poland, after his father, Grand Rabbi Solomon Halberstam, died in 2000.
The Bobovs are one of about 60 sects of Hasidism.

Born in Poland in 1907, a descendant of one of the first Hasidic leaders in Europe, Halberstam survived the Holocaust and moved to New York in the 1960s.
In 1998, the Bobov and Satmar sects had a marital merger of sorts when Halberstam's grandson married the granddaughter of Moses Teitelbaum, the Satmar grand rebbe, or rabbi.
The Satmar sect originated in Hungary, while the Bobov or Bobovers, as they are sometimes called, came from Poland.

Hasidim live in tightly-knit communities (known as "courts") that are spiritually centered around a dynastic leader known as a rebbe, who combines political and religious authority.
The many different courts and their rebbes are known by the name of the town where they originated: thus the Bobov came the town of Bobova in Poland (Galicia), the Satmar from Satu Mar in present-day Hungary, the Belz from Poland, and the Lubavitch from Russia.
The population of each of these groups has increased dramatically since the first American Hasidic communities were formed in the late 1940s and 1950s, with especially rapid growth in the last two decades.
