Taken as a whole, the Bodkin, it seems to me, is essentially Cory’s rambunctious public journal — a consecutive record of forgivably egomaniacal observations that are as integrated as they are scattered, thereby accurately reflecting the strange mind caught in the act of composing them.
The Bodkin is so embarrassingly cluttered with dancing advertisements and belligerent pop-ups that I can barely stand to see my words posted amid such garish schlock, even if that schlock does pay for the privilege of seeing my words posted at all.
Of course I understand if the Bodkin must be relegated to the archives and stripped of its interactive features to make way for current offerings, but so long as I can send people a URL that will make these words rise up on their screens, I’ll be likely to do that with egocentric frequency.

Bodkin point - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In its simplest form it is an uncomplicated squared metal spike, and was used extensively during the Middle Ages as a means of penetrating mail armour.
Whatever the case, it was determined on the Medieval battlefield that a bodkin point could penetrate armour more effectively than a broadhead point.
The ability of the bodkin to penetrate armour was nonetheless limited by the skill and strength of the archer, and it could only defeat high-quality plate armour at short ranges, if at all.

Fletching   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
The bodkin point, as shown in the far left of the image below was for punching though armour by reducing the contact area of the head and increasing the probability of penetration.
These point types were not as effective for hunting as the small impact area did not do widespread damage to the target, such as severing veins, arteries or vital organs on the way.
Bodkin points are a reasonable target arrow to use on modern archery butts.

Arrows vs armour - NetSword Discussion Forums
Bodkins would be employed inside 100-120 yrds, in a less drastic arc of fire - but they weren't humming in at a flat trajectory.
I can't comment as to wether the bodkin was in use at Cressy, but if barbed broadheads were used in their place, they would have had a similar range and stripe, if not an exact armour penetrating capability - only flight arrows would reach out to the extreme range of the bow.
The point I would like to address is the statement that "due to the particular qualities of chainmail, an arrow that will pass through a suit of mail hung up on a rod will not penetrate a suit of mail worn by a man with the proper padding beneath".

At one point, spying a sandy beach behind the breakwater of a million dollar house we beached the boats to stretch our legs.
When we reached a point where there was no more creek to paddle up reality at last began to sink in - despite being led by a superb night navigator we must have passed the take out cove somehow.
Eventually we rounded a point and could see, off in the distance, the bay at the mouth of Bodkin Creek from where we had started hours ago.

Its entrance lies through the notorious Bodkin Point (which shoals to both north and east) but is well marked and maintained and requires only a slow approach and an eye on the depth sounder for safe passage.

5 SLIM SAXON HUNTING HEADS Medieval Archery Bow
Platemail was effective at preventing penetration, as even if the point penetrated, the cutting edges of the arrowhead had to open a very large rend in the plate before the more giving flesh beneath was even cut, let alone the arrowhead penetrated the inch or so required for a dangerous wound.
Plate mail was especially vulnerable to bodkin arrows, since the heavy square point punched quickly through the plate, then tapered, allowing the remaining energy of the shot to be delivered to the flesh of the soldier without needing to further widen the rend in the plate to achieve a fatal wounding depth.
The bodkin arrow would gradually lose its place in the battle fields to the increasing popularity of early firearms, even though it was much more precise and lethal than those, a precision that would be recovered only with the advent of the rifle centuries later.

The bodkin was case hardened so as to retain the tremendous core strength, required to resist the bending forces involved in penetrating after an off square hit.

myArmoury.com - How does a full plate armour react to a arrow from a longbow
Neither one could penetrate a breast plate head on, but the plate bodkin was good at finding gaps for some reason...the mail bodkin was supposed to hit the middle of a ring of mail and split it open, or go through far enough to wound the victim.
Depending on the weave of the mail the point of the arrow would have to be almost needle like to penetrate some.
The point of all this is to say the longbow is extremely effective against fully armoured knights-- just not in the way everyone might imagine.

The Medieval English Longbow   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
The famed bodkin point, unlike the broadhead, was reserved strictly for war.
But as Morris and Oman pointed out, the catalysis for the use of the longbow was found in Wales.
A final argument supporting the Scandinavian origins of the longbow comes from Dr. Lynn White, Jr., noted medievalist, who writes that in old Irish there are two words for bow: one is for a short bow, and its root is Celtic; the other is for a longbow, and its root is Norse.

ANNAPOLIS — While British troops were attacking Washington on Aug. 24, 1814, a minor skirmish in the War of 1812 was taking place at Bodkin Point near the mouth of the Patapsco River, south of Baltimore.
Nielsen said proof that a skirmish took place in Bodkin Creek could place added importance on Hancock's Resolution, a small rock farmhouse built in the 1700s that is preserved as part of the Anne Arundel County park system.

The bodkin point was known as early as the 4th century AD, and probably earlier.
Worsfield further demonstrates his ignorance of medieval swords by stating, “ Up until this point almost all swords were heavy and required more strength than skill to maneuver.” Apparently 2.5 lbs is too heavy for this guy.
Worsfield solidifies his lack of insight into the nature of real weapons and armor with this statement: “The controlled bio-mechanical finger manipulation of the point as required in modern sport fencing would be impossible given these restrictions.” First off, I really don’t know what he is trying to say by using the word “bio-mechanical”.
