The Body Snatcher is a 1885 work by Robert Louis Stevenson.
In the course of his labors, Fettes discovers that a body brought to him is a woman’s he knew.

The Body-Snatcher (1884, 1906 ed) by Robert Louis Stevenson
The body of the unfortunate girl was duly dissected, and no one remarked or appeared to recognize her.
The coffin was exhumed and broken open; the body inserted in the dripping sack and carried between them to the gig; one mounted to keep it in its place, and the other, taking the horse by the mouth, groped along by wall and bush until they reached the wider road by the Fisher's Tryst.
The rain had moulded the rough sacking to the outlines of the body underneath; the head was distinct from the trunk, the shoulders plainly modelled; something at once spectral and human riveted their eyes upon the ghastly comrade of their drive.

He was mesmerising as the Monster in "Frankenstein" and simply unforgettable as Gray in "The Body Snatcher".
He never presents the character as pure evil (though he did freak me out on many an occasion) and Karloff is always playing on the character having some unresolved mystery to him.
I simply loved the performance…the voice; the body language and the silent cunning nature just made the character and performance instantly brilliant.

 The Body Snatcher
Had that idea been broached to him in words, he would have recoiled in horror; but the lightness of his speech upon so grave a matter was, in itself, an offence against good manners, and a temptation to the men with whom he dealt.
To bodies that had been laid in earth, in joyful expectation of a far difFerent awakening, there came that hasty, lamp-lit, terror-haunted resurrection of the spade and mattock.
A nameless dread was swathed, like a wet sheet, about the body, and tightened the white skin upon the face of Fettes; a fear that was meaningless, a horror of what could not be, kept mounting to his brain.

"The Body Snatcher is precise in its details of 19th-century medical schooling, and after its release was screened for students at a number of American medical colleges.
Karloff, a kindly monster, is the agent by which the child comes to walk again; Daniell, who does the actual healing, grows increasingly bestial in the pride of his knowledge.
Forces of enlightenment and entrapment, reason and passion, daylight and darkness, are warring here as they are in the very best of Lewton's films, but this time the lines are too heavily drawn and much subtlety is lost in the impulse to moralise.

It is a serious exploration of serious issues-- identity and transformation, resistance in captivity, recovery from torture-- which, due to the nature of the villain and the things that occur, is going to have to deal realistically with sex, as well as other things.

The Blair Witch Project is being hailed as a new benchmark in terror, but its young creators have a long way to go before matching the literally terrific output of producer/writer Val Lewton, who made a whole string of horror classics at RKO in the 1940s.
The Body Snatcher, which marked the last joint screen appearance of Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi, is one of Newton's finest.
The film is based on a Robert Louis Stevenson short story, itself inspired by the real-life antics of Burke and Hare, two lads in early-19th-century Edinburgh who robbed fresh graves and sold the cadavers to doctors for research.

When MacFarlane protests that he has no bodies to study the operation on, Fettes is shocked when Gray goes out and murders them.
The scene where Karloff steals the first body is told with a nicely shocking economy - we seeing an exaggerated shadow creeping along the graveyard wall as we hear the dog waiting beside its dead master’s grave whining, the shadow swings the spade with a clang and the dog’s howl suddenly dies.
The only real lapse is the climax with the scene with the body under the sack returning to life which, while quite shocking, adds a quasi-supernatural element that jars with the rest of the film’s carefully established mood.

I read somewhere that Val Lewton was less than thrilled to learn he would have to use Boris Karloff in his next movie, as he perceived him as being the standard boogeyman that he was trying to avoid using in his horror films.
This was until he actually met and talked to Karloff, and discovered that they were actually on the same wavelength.
It was from Lewton that Karloff would receive some of the most complex roles in his career, and THE BODY SNATCHER is their triumph.

It was once forbidden to even speak of the inner functioning of the human body.
All of Lewton's films were genre classics that depended not on blood or gore, but rather on suspenseful and haunting atmospheres created through the use of shadowy photography, eerie lighting, and even eerier quietness at the tensest of moments.
In particular the scenes between Karloff's character Grey and the little girl are particularly haunting, as you see his "tender" side on the surface while at the same time knowing what lurks beneath.
