Body Worlds - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Body Worlds (German title: Körperwelten) is a travelling exhibition of preserved human bodies and body parts which are prepared using a technique called plastination to reveal inner organs or structures.
For example, there are bodies with prosthetics such as artificial hip joints or heart valves; a liver with cirrhosis; and the lungs of a smoker and non-smoker placed side by side.
These bodies were prepared by injecting a red dye and plastinating agent into their blood vessels, then using chemicals and ultrasound to dissolve away their flesh and bones.

Body art is art made on, with, or consisting of, the human body.
The most common forms of body art are tattoos and body piercings, but other types include scarification, branding, scalpelling, shaping (for example tight-lacing of corsets), and body painting.
In Western art, body art appears to be a sub-category of performance art, in which artists use or abuse their own body to make their particular statements.

The Graphic - Take a look at what's inside
After the soul, the body is the greatest thing I ‘own/owned’ as a human being, a miracle with the interplay of cells and organs,” one anonymous female donor said.
Although the body donors’ causes of death are not revealed, it is clear that many of the donors suffered from physical ailments and disease.
Their diseased bodies and organs stand in stark contrast to the bodies and organs from healthier donors, imparting a tangible understanding of sickness and affliction.

There are slices of bodies from different angles and – especially fascinating – dissections of limbs in which joints have been replaced with stainless steel, bones joined with plates and screws, and hearts cut open to reveal prosthetic valves.
We are reminded of the dissections for public amusement that took place in the 16th and 17th centuries, the subsequent forbidding of anatomical studies (von Hagens is rather too kind about the role of the church) and the ignoble history of grave robbings that were necessary for medical education up to the late 19th century.
The catalogue and all other materials emphasise the informed consent process for body donors, and the professor has put his body where his mouth is, by volunteering himself for the process after his death.

If Christianity could lead the world's religions with their leadership and enlightenment regarding evolution in the same way it did with anatomy, then it would be a deep credit to the church and to Christianity as a forward looking and enlightened religion.
