Theories that engage with the monstrous, altered, and masquerading body do not position these terms as static binaries in opposition to the ideal or normal body, but rather their arguments are located within the body itself such that encounters with the strange are constant conditions of becoming (Shildrick, 2002).
Bodies have been accorded a place of central importance in recent scholarship as researchers attempt to construct the meanings of the lived body, the social body, and body image (Grosz, 1994).
Body alteration or modification is often described by activities such as wearing particular clothes, using cosmetics, tattooing, piercing, cosmetic surgery, dieting, and weight training to alter the appearance and form of the body (Featherstone, 2000).

Historically, tattoos, and to a lesser extent, other forms of body ornamentation, were spread throughout Western cultures primarily by soldiers and sailors, who brought back to their home countries the exotic practices they had observed in the far corners of the world where they had traveled in the pursuit of conquest and trade.
Although piercings, tattoos, and other body manipulations remain far outside the mainstream of accepted Western values, these practices are growing in popularity among persons variously rebelling against the mainstream culture, asserting membership in subcultural "tribes," ornamenting their body in a personally significant way, seeking spiritual experience, or some combination of these motivations.

When the plane reached Washington, they furtively removed the body from an opening on the darkened far side of the plane, while the empty bronze casket was removed on the other side in view of the crowd and in the light of cameras, then placed in an ambulance for the official motorcade.
Lifton omits from his account that the body was wet, dripping in blood and other fluids that, when lifted from the coffin, would have left telltale signs and alerted aides, crew, and guards.
The president’s body was removed from the casket in which it had been transported and was placed on the autopsy table, at which time the complete body was wrapped in a sheet and the head area contained an additional wrapping which was saturated with blood.

(Ĭnûr´she), in physics, the resistance of a body to any alteration in its state of motion, i.e., the resistance of a body at rest to being set in motion or of a body in motion to any change of speed or change in direction of motion.
Newton's second law of motion states that the external force required to affect the motion of a body is proportional to that acceleration.
The constant of proportionality is known as the mass, which is the numerical value of the inertia; the greater the inertia of a body, the less is its acceleration for a given applied force.
