Body-on-frame - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mounting a separate body to a rigid frame which supports the drivetrain was the original method of building automobiles, and its use continues to this day.
Most small passenger vehicles switched to unibody construction in the 1960s, leaving just trucks and large cars using conventional frames.
The original frames were made of wood (commonly ash), but steel ladder frames became common in the 1930s.

InsightCentral.net - Encyclopedia - Honda Insight Aluminum Construction
In a steel unit body, frame members are formed by stamping in large presses and then joined to the body by welding.
However, with the Insight's body all of these panels, including the roof, floor, front and rear wheel wells, rear quarter-panels, bulkhead, and even the doors and hood, are made of aluminum alloy.
On the Insight, each frame member's size and strength is optimized so that the frame is strong where it needs to be, and lighter in less critical areas.

Superleggera - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Unlike the monocoque and body-on-frame methods widely adopted by the 1950s, superleggera cars use a network of thin metal tubes as a full-body frame.
These are then covered with metal body panels, often made of exotic lightweight materials like aluminium or magnesium.
This construction technique is no longer used in production cars today, but is still found in low-volume and hand-built sports models.

MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia: Calculating body frame size
Body frame size is determined by a person's wrist circumference in relation to his height.
Determining frame size: To determine the body frame size, measure the wrist with a tape measure and use the following chart to determine whether the person is small, medium, or large boned.
For example, a man whose height is over 5' 5" and wrist is 6" would fall into the small-boned category.

Space Shuttle Challenger - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Challenger was the second shuttle orbiter to be placed into service (after Columbia) and was constructed using a body frame (STA-099) that had initially been produced for use as a test article.
Its maiden voyage was on April 4, 1983, and made eight subsequent round trips to low earth orbit before it was destroyed during the launch of its tenth mission, mission 51-L, on January 28, 1986.

Feature Article - The Frame of The Future? - 01/04
The result was a 100% steel frame of non-traditional shape that is 23% lighter than the baseline, meets or exceeds its performance, reduces overall frame weld length by 50%, and has a 31¢ per pound price premium.
Based on the manufacturing requirements, the frame retained this overall shape, but moved from upper and lower rails connected by triangulating members to a design with an open C-channel center section and front and rear hydroformed rails.
By softening the front structure–through the “down gauging” of the front frame rails–car-to-truck crash compatibility is improved, although overall frame stiffness is reduced.

 vehicle_body_structures_101.txt
The body is responsible for the strength and stiffness of the vehicle, the dynamic response of the vehicle and the NVH characteristics.
The frame is responsible for most of the energy absorption in a crash and defines the dynamic response of the car as well as most of the Noise, Vibration, and Harshness (NVH) characteristics of the vehicle.
The body of the vehicle is generally isolated from the frame via rubber body mounts.

Feature Article - Framing The Question - 02/03
Bodies of steel and/or aluminum would be mounted to this frame, though recent reports suggest BMW is close to producing a carbon fiber body that is extremely light weight, strong, and affordable in high-price, low-volume applications.
The construction method was simple, proven (the majority of vehicles had been built this way since the industry started), quiet (due to the isolation of frame from body), and easily supported multiple vehicles off a single base.
In addition, because the frame supplied some structure, body design and development was somewhat simpler than with a fully unitized design.

 Body Integrity
The portion of the 3rdgen F body car that the front cross member, engine, and all of the steering components attach (bolt) to, is the front sub-frames.
These cars all have unibody or monocoque, if you prefer, type construction, which is to say that they do not have frames upon which the body rests.
The reason 3rd generation F body doors are so heavy is because they have massive reinforcements built into their construction.

Unless you drive a lot of wet muddy roads, SUVs SUCK.
Body on frame is the best form of construction if you need to carry really large payloads or tow heavy objects.
Given that up until the past few years, most SUVs were based on body-on-frame trucks, this has been the case for some time.
That frame that makes it possible for the vehicle to tow a lot also transmits collision shock, rather than absorbing it.

 Body Meets Frame
No one has written a procedure manual for mounting an MB body to a CJ5 frame.
Larry Schultz's excellent body mounts and with rubber pucks from Four Wheel Drive Hardware the body tub was mounted to the frame.
In the next few weeks the engine, trans and transfer case will be installed with Howell Pro Injection, new drivelines, etc. Work will then progress to steering, brakes, seats, roll cage and a host of many other items on the list that only money, time and a total disregard for all logic will determine.

not as easy as body on frame cars/trucks (archive)
well one of the advantage to have a body on frame design is the repair.
Nobody does cheap work only expensive - good expansive (very rare) and bad expensive (mostly)
The body work needs time no matter how good is the guy he needs a lot of time to make it look good.

 Re: [a/s] Towing Question Can-Am
Body on frame construction lends itself to better towing, whereas the load is being absorbed by the thick frame members and not the more fragile thin body panels that make up a unibody structure.
Chrysler used body on frame construction through 1959 on all models.
It was found that the structure was too large and disportionate to reap the unibody's ultimate benefit of lightness.

 Cars: 2005 Toyota Tacoma X
Firmer and shorter springs are mounted at all-around, positioned out board of the frame rails for increased stability.
The chassis sits one full-inch lower than the standard Tacoma frame courtesy of the exclusive Bilstein gas shocks.
The increased size translates to an extra four-and-one-half inches of interior shoulder and hip room.

 GMC Envoy 4WD (2002)
The unit-construction "crossover" vehicles may have some advantages over a body-on-frame truck in lighter weight and a stiffer structure, for more car-like ride and handling qualities, but a body-on-frame truck can be just as comfortable if it is designed correctly.
Because of its extremely rigid chassis, with hydroformed side rails, and a rigid body structure, the Envoy's spring rates are soft, for comfort.
If the 2002 Envoy is larger and roomier than the previous model, it's still small enough to park easily in the crowded urban parking situations that are likely to be its natural habitat.

Body on frame vs. Unibody - www.ezboard.com
For years most trucks used the old body on frame design but now since they're becoming more car like a lot of them are switching to unibody.
Fred - body lifts are when you put spacers in between the frame and the body of the truck to get a higher ride for the body of the truck.
Well in case you didn't know...alll the cherokees (like mine) are unibodies and you cannot put on a body lift which hinders putting on big tires.

 VW Touareg SUV - Forums
The truth is that a monocoque body is stiffer than a frame on body because the uper part of the body acts as a giant truss and is ligther, as long as the attachment points for the major mechanical components are of substance no problem there for that limited use.
I was wondering about the frame since the Touareg has such huge torque numbers and an 8000lb towing capacity.
Also I saw one that couldn't open one of the doors anymore from repeated offroad excurisions torquing the door frame permanently out of wack.

Chassis frames: new tech for the old standby
Most major chassis and frame suppliers now have hydroforming capabilities, but insiders say Magna International Inc. is one of the auto industry's biggest proponents of hydroforming and is winning substantial new business as a result.
They don't look like much, but old-fashioned chassis frames are the very foundation for some of the toughest and most popular vehicles in North America.
The process doesn't allow as much flexibility in shape design as conventional stamping, and that can lead to design compromises or a structure that is not as stiff as a conventional structure of the same weight, he says.

 Body and Frame
I will begin the body work soon as the engine and drive train are squared away, and start getting her prepped for painting.
The glass decklid isn't in bad shape but it's warped and not perfectly flush with the body because it wasn't seated properly.
The glass hood and deck lid are good for weight reduction, but I can afford to wear the metal ones and sacrifice some accelleration for street use.

SoundDomain.com Car Audio Forum: Big 3 ??? - Body on Frame
My car ('96 Impala SS) is a body on frame and the chasis is many pieces welded together.
I dont know if I should ground the big 3 to the frame, ground it to the chasis and add a battery to frame ground, or just ground my amps to the chasis and not worry about the welding points.
The only post I came across mentioned that the Big 3 should be grounded the chasis and not the frame to have a common ground point.

 Body Frame
Using this method, some people find that they don't need to lose as much weight as they first thought due to the size of their frame, others of course find that they are not in fact big boned and that they need to lose more weight than they had originally thought.
The sizes are categorized into three groups:- Small frame, medium frame and large frame.
To refine and define theoretical weights, researchers added frame size as a factor.

 Separating the Body and Frame
Much of the body will soon get sandblasted and to prepare for that the body had to be lifted off the frame for some basic prep work.
What you don't see in these pictures is the hours upon hours of scraping that went into that part of the process.
For instance, the original undercoating had to be removed because sandblasting has little effect on it - it's too soft and gooey.

Never forget, though, that your fellow road-users had zero training to use these same attributes in traffic, and will therefore make any impossible or unexpected move you can think of, simply because they do not expect anyone within a 50 meter ‘bubble’ around their car.
