 Boeing's Metal Monoplanes
The Model 247, developed in 1933, was an all-metal, twin-engine airplane and the first modern passenger airliner.
Boeing's first all-metal monoplane was the Monomail, designed to carry cargo and mail, and the single unsuccessful XP-9 monoplane fighter.
Boeing's chief engineer R.J. Minshall had called for a plane no larger than the planes in current production, claiming that pilots liked smaller planes and a larger plane would create problems such as the need for larger hangars.

 FlightSim.Com Feature: Great Airplanes 3: Douglas DC-3
Anyway, when the skies were ruled by planes of the trimotor generation, Boeing released the twin engined Model 247, a bold move when America was fighting its way clear of the worst economic depression in its history.
The 247 carried ten passengers and two crew at up to 180 mph and it represented such a leap in performance that it put the Ford Trimotor out of business.
Though the DC-2 was better than the Boeing 247, it had its share of problems – chief among these were that it was directionally unstable and difficult to land, but it was also nose heavy and suffered from icing problems.

Boeing, as part of the United Aircraft and Transport company, decided to develop a new airliner based on it's previous single-engined Monomail and retractable undercarriaged B-9 bomber.
The result was the Model 247, which carried 10 passengers at 155 mph in a new level of comfort.
It appeared that the Model 247 had a bright future in airline service, but the large order (which took up all of Boeing's manufacturing capacity) lead other airlines to search for alternatives, which sent TWA to Douglas and the DC-2.
