Boeing: History -- Products - Boeing 707/720 Commercial Transport
After the Air Force agreed to let Boeing build commercial jets based on the prototype, 367-80, already the basis for the KC-135 military tanker, airlines began to order the 707, the commercial transport variant of the Dash 80.
Boeing delivered 856 Model 707s in all versions between 1957 and 1994; of these, 725, delivered between 1957 and 1978, were for commercial use.
The 707 was designated the 720 when it was modified for short-to-medium routes and for use on shorter runways.

Boeing's answer to the problem was the first twin aisle airliner - the 747.
The Boeing 720, originally designated 707-020 but later changed for marketing reasons, was a modification of the 707-120 designed for medium-range operation from shorter runways.

The Boeing 707 was the United States' first production jet airliner, and the aircraft with which the US first gained the lead in commercial jet manufacture.
This original Boeing 707 was followed by a whole family of 707 passenger and cargo variants, with different lengths and weights, and turbofan power.
Including the prototype, there are eight Boeing jet airliners; the others are the 707-120, the 707-120B, the 707-220, the 707-320, the 707-420, the 720 and the 720B.

How the 720 got its number   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Boeing initially considered dubbing it the 707-020 series, since it essentially was a derivative 707 model.
Boeing management pondered this, and since it very badly wanted a launch customer (and to prevent a sale to Convair), it decided to name the new model the ``720'' instead.
In fact, most other carriers proudly trumpeted the ``720'' tag, since the higher number did make it appear that it was a more advanced model than the 707's being produced at their side at the Boeing factory.

The 720 is a smaller capacity, lighter, medium range variant of the 707, given its own model number to indicate significant engineering changes.
Introduced in 1959, the 720 (originally designated 707-020) retained the same basic structure as the 707-120, but was 2.54m (8ft 4in) shorter, which reduced seating to 112 (38 + 74) in a typical two class arrangement.
But many components were interchangeable between the 720 and 707, while inside the cabin the 720 and 707 shared the same passenger interior and flightdeck.

This possibility appears to be precluded by the different pulse frequencies of the surveillance and precision radars (1000 and 5500 per sec., respectively), and by the behavior of the bogie, which appeared to relate it to the Boeing 720.
If it is assumed that the bogie was a secondary echo from a reflector near the runway, then the bogie would have been always the same distance behind the 720 as the reflector in front of it, and would have appeared on the line of sight from the precision radar antenna to the 720.
In general, the association of the unidentified target with the 720 and the lack of a visible counterpart suggest strongly that it was a radar artifact.

Another difference that the 720 had that i never saw on a 707 was a underside "small tail fin" which was about 1-foot high and about 2-foot long....
A 720 that was dumped in Dublin (bahama world airlines -i think) with a red-dolphin-on-tail-fin had this "feature" and when asked about this 'we' were told it was an additional fin to improve stability.

On the morning of December 1, 1984, a remotely controlled Boeing 720 transport took off from Edwards Air Force Base (Edwards, California), made a left-hand departure and climbed to an altitude of 2300 feet.
It was planned that the aircraft would land wings-level and exactly on the centerline during the CID, thus allowing the fuselage to remain intact as the wings were sliced open by eight posts cemented into the runway.
The Boeing 720 landed askew and caused a cabin fire when burning fuel was able to enter the fuselage.
