Boeing 727 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Eventually, the three airlines agreed on a trijet, and thus the 727 was born.
Since the 727 proved to be a reliable and versatile airliner that came to form the core of many start-up airlines' fleets, it is sometimes described as the "DC-3 of the Jet Age." Even as the larger 747s came about in 1970, international airlines still needed the 727.
Also, the 727 was one of the last airliners in service to have a three-person crew, including a flight engineer, a crewmember whose job is performed by computerized systems on newer planes.

It was designed for Eastern Airlines and British Airways to replace the Boeing 727, and entered airline service on New Year's Day, 1983.
The 757 uses many of the same components as the widebody Boeing 767, and aircrews and maintenance personnel can quickly be cross-trained from one type to the other.
The governments of Saudi Arabia and the United States of America have fitted 757's for VIP transport duties, and at least one is in use as a private aircraft (that of Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen).

Boeing even went so far as to build an entirely new factory for 747 production because the aircraft was so much larger than its predecessors.
Despite its bulk, the 747 was designed to be as similar to smaller Boeing designs, like the 707 and 727, as possible to ease crew familiarization and airport compatability.
Boeing hopes that these improvements will keep the 747 line competitive with the Airbus A380.
