 Boeing 747
The Boeing 747 is the largest passenger airliner yet built and one of a class of airliners known as jumbo jets (though the under-construction Airbus A380 will be larger).
Other special 747s include four 747-200s which were converted for the U.S. Air Force to airborne emergency command and control posts, a 747 to transport the Space Shuttle and aerial refueling tankers.
The first edition of the jet, the 747-100, rolled out of the Boeing factory in Everett, Washington, USA on 2 September 1969.

Boeing Aircraft tells us that their 747-8 Intercontinental and 747-8 Freightliner aircraft are the new high capacity 747s that offer airlines the lowest operating costs and the best economies of any large passenger or freighter airplanes in the world today.
Boeing hoped that the abilities of the SP would compete and take orders from the Douglas DC-10 and create a niche market, but only a total of 45 were built.
Alan Mulally, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes said, "We are thrilled to have Cargolux and Nippon Cargo choose the new 747-8 and become the launch customers for this next generation of the proud and valuable 747 airplane family.

Boeing knew that it had to compete in the field and to save time it looked into shortening the 747 fuselage instead of developing a new aircraft.
Boeing anticipates that as many as 40 -300's could be converted to freighters during the next 20 years.
In May 1985 Boeing announced that it was to develop the 747-400 - an advanced evolution of the 747-300.

 The Boeing 747
Nevertheless, building the plane was a highly risky undertaking for Boeing, both financially and technically.
Boeing used a new method of spotting potential hazards known as "fault tree analysis," where engineers could easily see the impact of a failure of one part or system on other parts.
At one point early in 1970, Boeing had some 30 planes parked at its plant that could not be delivered until Pratt and Whitney had corrected the deficiencies of its JT-9D engine.

Boeing 747SP Website - What is an SP?!?!
Boeing estimated that a market existed for 214 aircraft, and the financial break-even point would be achieved with 45 aircraft.
On November 12, 1975, Boeing decided to showcase that performance, and flew the fourth SP (msn 21025) non-stop from New York to Tokyo (a distance of 6,927 miles) with 200 passengers on board in 13 hours, 33 minutes, setting a new world record.
But Boeing would claim the SP program to be a success regardless, for no other reason than it provided a springboard for many airlines to enter the wide body market.

Boeing 747 Jumbo Jet - Widebody Aircraft Parade
After Boeing lost the competition for the development of a large airlifter for the US Air Force in 1965, it sought ways to apply the experience gathered on this project to a big airliner.
Boeing concluded, however, that such an aircraft would be too big for the aviation world of the 1970s.
During the late 1980s Boeing developed the 747-400, with the same fuselage length and extended upper deck as the 747-300, a larger wingspan, winglets, a highly modernized digital flight deck, higher weights and a lower fuel consumption thanks to improved engines.

Boeing Sonic Cruiser - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Boeing Sonic Cruiser was a subsonic concept aircraft proposed by Boeing Commercial Airplanes in 2001.
Boeing had recently withdrawn its proposed 747-X derivative from competition with the Airbus A380 when not enough airline interest was forthcoming, and instead proposed the Sonic Cruiser as a completely different approach.
A patent drawing filed by Boeing on March 22, 2001 put the baseline aircraft's dimensions at 250 feet in length, with a wingspan of 164.9 feet.

The Boeing Model 747SP airplane will incorporate a novel or unusual design feature; specifically, the aft lower lobe compartment will be used as a combined service compartment and Class C cargo compartment.

The fuselage is shortened by 14.35m (47ft 1in), while the vertical tail was increased in height to compensate for the reduced moment arm with the shorter fuselage.
Structurally the 747SP was lightened in some areas because of the significant reduction in gross weights.

Boeing could not afford to develop an all-new design, instead shortening the 747 and re-optimized it for speed and range at the expense of capacity.
The SP was also the first Boeing widebody to have a wingspan measuring longer than the length of the plane; the other is the 777-200LR, which is only slightly wider than it is long.
Another special 747SP is the SOFIA infrared astronomical observatory, where the airframe was modified to carry a 2.5-meter-diameter infrared reflecting telescope to high altitude, above most of the infrared-absorbing water vapor in the atmosphere.
