The A380 is now the largest passenger airliner, topping the Boeing 747, which was the largest for 35 years.
At the time, Boeing was considering a New Large Aircraft to replace the 747, and had recently acquired McDonnell Douglas and their cancelled MD-12 design.
While the A380 was being marketed, Boeing floated the concept of the 747X, a version of the 747 with the forebody "hump" extended aftwards for more passenger room.

 CNN.com - Boeing slowing 747X superjumbo? - Mar. 29, 2001
A Boeing spokesman declined to comment late Wednesday, but the world's largest plane maker recently said it was discussing with airline customers a triangle-shaped "delta-wing" plane that would carry about 250 passengers and cut trans-Atlantic travel by 90 minutes compared to current subsonic flights.
Boeing (BA: Research, Estimates) Chairman Phil Condit last week said he was "excited" about the possibility of a new mid-sized jet that would fly at Mach.95, or 95 percent of the speed of sound, which is roughly 750 mph at sea level and 660 mph at 30,000 feet.
Boeing last week announced plans to move its corporate headquarters out of Seattle, where it has built airplanes for 85 years, in a move aimed at de-emphasizing the commercial airplane unit.

The 747X program was frozen in March 2001, but not officially dropped, when Boeing announced that it was now working on an airplane capable of flying at the threshold of the speed of sound and dubbed the "Sonic Cruiser".
On 29 March, Boeing indicated to the press that it was freezing 747X development work, as well as the 767-400ERX, a growth derivative of the -400ER.
Boeing highlighted that it was working on a further development stage that would retain some of the features developed for the 747X.

Boeing unveils new, faster plane of the future   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Boeing Chairman Phil Condit said early this year that the company was putting more effort into the development of a plane to serve what's known as the middle of the commercial market.
Boeing is still working on the design of the new plane, but the project would consist of a family of planes that would seat between 100 and 300 passengers, sources said.
Boeing has always maintained that the market for a plane bigger than the 747-400 was not big enough to justify the cost of developing an all-new jumbo or superjumbo, and that's why it was looking at a derivative design.

Boeing Compares 747X and Airbus A3XX Economics
Boeing comparisons of 747X and A3XX economics are based on its Boeing's own "Boeing A3XX" design, and not on numbers published by Airbus or included in the European group's offers to airlines, according to John Roundhill, Boeing Commercial VP for product strategy and development.
Boeing does not present its assessment of the A3XX in detail, but it appears to represent a significant discount from published Airbus figures.
Boeing, for example, claims that the 747X "flies about 700 nmi further than the A3XX." Boeing claims a range of 7,600 nmi for the 747X with 522 passengers (in a three-class layout, with flight-attendant rest areas and galley stowage in the upper lobe), suggesting a range of 6,900 nmi for the "Boeing" A3XX-100.

Instead, Boeing released drawings for an aircraft unlike any other existing commercial jet, with a delta wing near its tail, two smaller wings near the nose, and a pair of engines blended into the wing.
A similar group of airlines was used to advise Boeing in developing its 777 jet family in the early 1990s.

In recent weeks, Boeing Chairman Phil Condit and other top executives have been in Japan to persuade government and industry to make an investment that could be as high as $1 billion, or 20 percent of the program -- in exchange for work on main wing subassemblies.
Boeing needs to protect its most important turf from rival Airbus Industrie, which has been trying -- unsuccessfully -- since early last year to sign up the Japanese as partners in the development of the A380 superjumbo.
The 747X program includes a stretch version that would carry about 100 more passengers than the 416-seat 747-400, and a super long-range derivative that would be about the same size as the 747-400.

Boeing intended to launch these derivatives in 2001, six to nine months after the initial presentation, if sufficient orders could be signed – between 10 and 30 were expected.
A Boeing mock-up outlined that on flights with the typical flight length and passenger load that the 747X airplanes would operate, there might be as many as 100 galleys carts in the airplane.

Boeing scraps 747X, plans faster jet - Mar. 29, 2001
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Aircraft maker Boeing Co. is dropping plans for a larger version of the 747 jumbo jet, conceding that segment of the market to competitor Airbus Industrie, and instead will seek to develop a commercial jet that will fly just under the speed of sound.
But Boeing has found no buyers for its 747X, as the proposed larger, longer-range version of its plane is called, while Airbus has orders for 66 of the A380s.
Mecray said Boeing had never been committed to the super-jumbo market and started looking at a 747X only in response to Airbus' efforts, despite its top officials questioning the market for the plane.

Boeing has offered only a General Electric engine on its latest model, the 777X, and Condit confirmed reports that GE had offered to partly finance development of the plane as part of the deal to make it the exclusive 777X powerplant supplier.
