  Boeing 7E7 = Washington jobs?
Knowing that Boeing did not plan to manufacture the majority of its 7E7 plane in Washington (primarily three-day final assembly), supporters of the nearly $4 billion in tax and other incentives granted to Boeing instead justified their support on the basis that they were "safeguarding" nearly 200,000 jobs.
Despite the billions in tax incentives and other considerations bestowed to Boeing without the requirement of a single net new job being created, we may have hastened the elimination of the jobs for those currently employed on manufacturing Boeing's 737, 757, and 767.
It is becoming clear that the 7E7 is not the Washington job engine it was advertised to be.

 CNN.com - Boeing taking orders for 7E7 - Dec. 16, 2003
Boeing said Tuesday the 200- to 250-seat 7E7 will be built in the Seattle suburb of Everett, Washington, home of Boeing's other wide-body jets, ending months of speculation that the work might go elsewhere.
Without the 7E7, analysts say Boeing would be relegated to also-ran status in the two-horse race with Airbus, which has become the world's most prolific jetliner maker with a backlog of 1,467 jet orders compared with Boeing's 1,112.
The 7E7 would replace the slow-selling 757, which Boeing is discontinuing, and the 767 line, which has slowed to just one aircraft per month to sustain production until a controversial order for 100 U.S. Air Force fuel tankers is finalized.

Boeing spokesman John Dern said Thursday the board is scheduled to deliberate on the 7E7 program Sunday and Monday at company headquarters in Chicago, with a final decision expected on Monday.
Analysts say Boeing is almost forced to go ahead with the program amid criticism that it has allowed its commercial-jet program to fall behind rival Airbus after years of failing to launch new aircraft.
Boeing could badly use the boost a new airplane program would provide for employees and customers after a series of ethical scandals in its defense contracting business that have tainted its reputation and cost it more than $1 billion in lost contracts.

Boeing could jeopardize the launch funding of the new 7E7 aircraft should it press for an investigation of government subsidies received by rival Airbus because Boeing itself has received government subsides that violate world-trade agreements, according to David Pritchard, a research associate at the Canada-United States Trade Center in the UB Department of Geography.
Boeing's midsize 7E7 "Dreamliner" is the first new jet the company has launched since 1990 and is scheduled to enter commercial service in 2008.
Pritchard's investigation of Boeing's 7E7 funding is described in the research paper "Industrial Subsidies and the Politics of World Trade: The Case of the Boeing 7E7," published with co-author Alan MacPherson, chair of the Department of Geography, in the spring issue of Industrial Geographer.
