Boeing 747 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Boeing lost the contract to Lockheed's C-5 Galaxy but came under pressure from its most loyal airline customer, Pan Am, to develop a giant passenger plane that would be over twice the size of the 707.
Boeing is now working with airlines to create a new 747 design called the 747 Advanced which will use same engine and cockpit technology as the 787.
Boeing was quite keen to discourage the media and the public using the term "jumbo jet" for the 747, but their efforts were in vain, and now the term is synonymous with the 747.

Boeing 2707   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-14)
Boeing had been working on a number of small-scale studies on supersonic transport (SST) designs since 1952, but set up a permanent research committee in 1958 which slowly grew to a $1 million effort by 1960.
The SST was intended to carry 250 passengers (a large number at the time), fly at Mach 2.7-3.0, and have a trans-Atlantic range of 4,000 miles.
Boeing predicted that if the go-ahead was given immediately, construction of prototypes would begin in early 1967 and the first flight could be made in early 1970.

It was the Lockheed C-5A Galaxy versus the Boeing 747.
Boeing lost the contract to Lockheed, but came under pressure from its most loyal airline customer Pan Am to develop a giant passenger plane which would be over twice the size of the 707.
Boeing has promised that it will always be ready to produce larger, more advanced versions of the 747 when the market for such a plane develops, but industry analysts are already predicting the end for the 35-year old giant.

The Rise & Fall Of The SST
With the Europeans committed to the SST, of course the Americans had to follow, and the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) set up a competition for an SST that would be faster, bigger, and better than the Concorde.
SST advocates were dismayed, but in hindsight cancelling the 2707-300 was the right decision.
One of the major obstacles to selling an SST was the fact that sonic booms prevented it from being operated at high speed over land, limiting its appeal, and of course an SST that didn't produce a sonic boom would overcome that obstacle.

Boeing: History -- Jets and Rockets Take Off - Supersonic Transport
On New year's Eve 1966, after more than 14 years of study, design work and competition, the federal government selected Boeing to build the prototype for the country's first supersonic transport (SST).
Government funding was withdrawn in 1971 before the prototype was finished.
However, the Boeing SST fostered advances in supersonic transportation, leading to the High Speed Civil Transport project.

The first designs for a civilian supersonic airliner were made in Britain in the late 1940s and came from advances in the understanding of supersonic flight with military and experimental jets.
Boeing and Lockheed competed in the design of an SST paper plane.
In 1962 a partnership agreement to build a trans-Atlantic SST was made between the French and British governments and the two aircraft industries - Sud Aviation (later Aerospatiale) and BAC.

The problems that Boeing had with the 747, however, were nothing compared with those the Company's SST project presented.
Other scientists hypothesized that the exhaust from SSTs, expelled into the atmosphere at high altitude, would start a self-perpetuating chemical reaction that would ultimately deplete a radiation-absorbing layer of ozone in the stratosphere and bring on an increase in skin cancer.
Three billion dollars would be spent before the first SST came off the assembly line, and at best the government would not recover its investment until 300 aircraft had been sold.

One problem associated with the SST is the tendency of the nose to pitch down as it flies from subsonic to supersonic flight.
Ultimately, Boeing with a swing-wing design was selected as the winner of the U.S. competition.
The size of the Boeing SST design grew to meet airline payload requirements.

 Super70s.com: Boeing SST
Although Congress finally provided funding to Boeing for the creation of the first prototype in late 1965, the funding would be cut by a more environmentally-friendly Congress before the first American SST (Supersonic Transport) would be built.
North American already had a remarkable military SST known as the Valkyrie, but Boeing beat out the Lockheed L-2000 and the North American NAC-60 (Douglas was too strapped for cash to compete) for the contract.
As the official Soviet airline Aeroflot bailed on their own SST within a two years of taking delivery of them and as both Air France and British Airways have given up Concorde and donated them to museums, the Americans should be glad they didn't pour any more money into the project than they did.

BOEING 2707-200 SST - As jet airliners proliferated, designs for supersonic airliners for transatlantic and other long haul passenger routes were produced in Europe and the USSR, and the US joined the race with a Mach 3 design.

HistoryLink Essay: U.S. Senate votes against Boeing Supersonic Transport (SST) on December 3, 1970.
NASA had selected Boeing and Lockheed to develop an American SST in 1966 and the project elicited initial interest from airlines, which placed orders for 122 aircraft.
Boeing's initial variable geometry "swing-wing" proved too heavy and complex (it was later adapted for the B-1 bomber) and had to be abandoned for a more traditional delta wing.
In a final indignity, Boeing was forced to sell the sleek full-scale mock-up of the SST housed in its Development Center near Boeing Field.

During 1966, Lockheed was matched with Boeing in a federal competition that was the mirror image of the one in 1965.

Airliners.net Tech Ops: The Boeing SST Questions
I was looking at a model I have of the Boeing SST and a couple of questions came to mind regarding the swing-wing.
Boeing's inlet design used axisymmetric centerbody (cone-style) inlets, but instead of translating back and forth to manage the shock wave, as the SR-71's inlets do, Boeing's variable-diameter centerbodies expanded and contracted to change the inlet's throat area.
The SST site linked on this thread is excellent, us people involved with Concorde always scan stuff about the aircraft, and SSTs in general, for the usual myths and errors, none on here, and a nice tribute to our soon to be departed aircraft.

Boeing had to abandon its swing-wing for a more conventional delta wing design, and cost overruns fueled Congressional criticism.
The Soviet Union was the first nation to complete an SST, the TU-144, which took its maiden flight on December 31, 1968, but the troubled plane saw only limited use.

 SST
A supersonic transport (SST) is a civilian airliner designed to travel at supersonic speeds.
Supersonic flight is much more expensive than subsonic flight, due to the heavier aircraft structures (the empty weight per seat of a Concorde is more than three times that for a Boeing 747), and the need for afterburning jet engines.
The United States designed the Boeing 2707 SST, which would have been larger and faster than the European and Soviet SSTs, but this was cancelled due to its cost, and due to opposition from environmentalists.

Many were surprised when Boeing got the SST contract in 1966, Lockheed's experience with high-speed flight had made them the front-runner in many people's opinion, and their delta L2000 design looked less risky, even allowing for the Mach 2.7 speed.
Boeing had been tipped to get the CX contract, so what happened was a reversal of expectations.
Ironically Boeing used their CX knowlegde on the 747, the aircraft which did a lot to kill the SST's mass sales prospects.

The aircraft industry is promoting the SST myth, to generate many billions of dollars in development funds to be supplied by governments via taxpayers, very few of whom have ever flown or will fly in an SST.
