As a defense conversion project in the late 1970s, Boeing Vertol built light rail vehicles for the Boston and San Francisco transit systems, based on a standard configuration promoted by the Urban Mass Transit Administration.
As a new design from a company with no previous experience in building rail transit equipment, the Boeing LRVs were considered expensive and unreliable; they were nicknamed "Boeing Bathtubs" for their off-white fiberglass interiors which darkened after exposure to sunlight.

NEW YORK--Aircraft component maker Boeing Vertol Co., Ridley Township, Pa., has initiated a major expansion and modernization of its engineering and manufacturing capabilities that a spokesman said could add nearly 1,000 engineers and other new employees to the company by the end of the year.
Boeing Vertol president Joseph Mallen said the expansion program will support all of Boeing Vertol's advanced rotorcraft programs, including the V-22 Osprey tilt rotor aircraft, and help it become a stronger force in the United States Army's light helicopter (LHX) competition.
The V-22, developed jointly by Boeing Vertol and Textron's Bell Helicopter, has takeoff capabilities similar to a helicopter, flies like a turboprop airplane, and is designed for multi-service use by the Marine Corps, Army and Navy.

The V-114 won the Army competition in March 1959, and Vertol was awarded a contract for a mockup and five prototypes, to be designated the "YHC-1B".
Vertol was now busy trying to develop two helicopters at the same time, which severely strained the company and led to the Boeing buyout.

The Vertol VZ-2 was the first tilt wing aircraft to successfully transition from vertical to horizontal flight.
In November 1961, Vertol replaced the wing with a new design that eliminated most of the buffet by incorporating flaps along the full length of the wing, along with a drooped leading edge.
