Bofors 37 mm - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Bofors 37 mm was an anti-tank gun used by some European armies during WW2.
Sweden - as 37 mm infanterikanon m/34 (model 1934), 37 mm pansarvärnskanon m/38 (model 1938 as AT gun), 37 mm Kanon m/38 stridsvagn (model 1938 as tank gun, was fitted to Landsverk Strv m/38, Strv m/39, Strv m/40 light tanks and to the Strv m/41, a Swedish version of the Czech TNH light tank).
Britain - as Ordnance QF 37 mm Mk I.

Bofors - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bofors' most famous owner was Alfred Nobel who owned the company from 1894 until his death in December of 1896.
Another well-known gun made by the company was the Bofors 37 mm anti-tank gun, a standard anti-tank weapon used by a variety of armies early in the war.
In recent years Bofors has lost much of its reputation in Sweden due to various suspect affairs, the most scandalous being the alleged kickbacks involved in securing a contract with the Indian Army in 1986, a venturesome business that has (speculatively) been associated with the murder of Olof Palme.

The Danish 20 mm automatic cannon, produced by the Madsen factory, was one of the most successful light cannons of the 1930s.

 Bofors 37 mm AT-guns
In 1934 Sweden adopted the 37 mm Bofors as the 37 mm infanterikanon m/34.
The only visible differences between the m/34 and the m/38 is that the m/34 was fitted with wire spoked wheels while the m/38 had disc wheels, and that the later version got an irregularly shaped shield.
The Tank-gun 37 mm Kanon m/38 stridsvagn is in large the same ordnance as the m/34, mounted in a recoil-sleeve instead of in a cradle.

Antitank weapons used by the Finns in Winter War, Part 2
Initially a 13 mm caliber was the favorite alternative but in 1939 a decision was also reached to also construct two 20 mm weapons for tests in mid 1939.
Theoretically, the difference of muzzle velocity and penetration between the 13 mm and 20 mm wasn't big, but the 20 mm round had superior fragmentation effect when it penetrated the armor.
Thus it was concluded that a kasapanos with 0.8 kg of TNT was sufficient.

 Fire and Ice: History
Finally, the decision was made to purchase the sleek, maneuverable 37 mm.
Bofors A/T cannon from Sweden (the very weapon Mannerheim had advised the Finns to buy, in large numbers, six months earlier), but by the time the contracts were signed, it was obvious that a Soviet attack was imminent.
Mortar shells bounced off their turrets; hand grenades barely scratched the paint; anti-tank mines were in critically short supply and positioning them in front of a moving vehicle was an action that required near-suicidal courage and exquisite timing.

Bofors 37mm Anti-Tank Gun for Phoenix Command
The Swedish Bofors design was very successful and won a number of license manufacturing contacts around Europe.
With its good performance, high rate of fire and motivated crews, the 37mm Bofors was extremely successful against primitive Soviet armor such as the T-26, BT, T-28 and even the monster T-35.
The low shilouette and white-painted gun shield along with the inadequate vision systems of early tanks made it difficult for the tankers to see the Bofors even when it was firing.

Former prime minister V P Singh, in his capacity as finance minister in the Rajiv Gandhi government, had signed the letter of intent issued to the Swedish A B Bofors company for supplying 400 155 mm Howitzer guns, according to the Central Bureau of Investigation.
The popularity of Singh's National Front had sky rocketed in the late 1980s after he quit the Congress and launched a crusade against Rajiv Gandhi and his government on the Bofors issue.
This resulted in a severe drubbing for the Congress in the 1989 Lok Sabha election, and Singh became the prime minister.
