Bofors 40 mm gun - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bofors was initially reluctant, the Swedish Navy being a fairly small market, but the Navy eventually agreed to pay for the development of a prototype.
Bofors responded with a gun that was, to some extent, a smaller version of a 57 mm (6-pounder) semi-automatic gun developed as an anti-torpedo boat weapon in the late 1800s by Finspong before Bofors drove them out of business.

The weight of the gun is balanced by one helical spring in the front arm and one in the rear arm and it only requires a small effort by three or four men to deploy the gun.
But on the other hand, since the guns that Bofors had designed themselves were their worst competitor, it did force the company to develop the new, improved, 40mm L/70.
The average towing speed of the Bofors gun was twice as high as the maximum towing speed of its competitors.

37MM AND 40MM GUNS IN BRITISH SERVICE
The gun was subsequently used by the British but suffered from the lack of an obvious role; it was too small to harm naval vessels and on land was outranged by the new quick-firing artillery pieces firing shrapnel shells, which were just as mobile.
The gun originally fired a shell weighing 0.9 kg (two pounds) at a muzzle velocity of about 610 m/s but just before the war the disadvantage of such a low velocity was recognised and a high-velocity loading, firing a 0.77 kg shell at a still modest 730 m/s, was introduced.
The Bofors gun was still in use by the RN into the 1990s, in a single barrelled air-cooled version, although it was gradually phased out in favour of 30mm guns.

 USS Slater, Weapons System, 40mm
Bofors guns soon began appearing fleet-wide, though not until mid-1944 was demand satisfied (and not for the Slater until May of 45).
Part of the problem was that the 40mm couldn't handle the VT proximity fuse, the 76mm guns being the smallest weapons able to handle that devastating item.
Evenstill, the Bofors 40mm remained the primary close-in anti-aircraft weapon of smaller vessels until the Japanese surrender.
