The river is best known for its large run of hatchery steelhead, yet some of the largest steelhead to return to any of the Olympic Peninsula rivers return to the upper portions of this river.
Calawah, which means "middle river", referring to the river's placement between the Sol Duc and Bogachiel rivers, begins just three or four miles northeast of Forks, Washington, where its two forks, the North and South, join.
Formed by the confluence of the Bogachiel and Sol Duc rivers, the Quillayute, one of the shortest rivers in Washington at less than 6 miles, is totally tidal.

After first filing for a homestead claim on the nearby upper Hoh River in 1906, Peter and Ora and their family of seven children moved to the Bogachiel River, which was slightly closer to the town of Forks.
The cascading volume of the river is increased by an average annual rainfall of 145 inches (Fletcher 1966, 218).
Although the valley floor is somewhat wider than that of the Bogachiel River, bottomlands often have soil that is unsuitable for agriculture and are susceptible to flooding.

River conditions and weather took a big chunk out of angler enthusiasm last week, but there was some angler activity and success had in a few Southwest Washington rivers.
Elwha: The river is still a bit high, but the trout fishing has been fair.

When we were making the last drop to the take out the local land owner was back filling his river front property that had gone south with the high water, and he told us that a boat just in front of us had just taken a nice 25-pounder out of the slot.
OK the rain can stop, the rivers here on the peninsula are over their banks, with better weather coming maybe this weekend will be good.
The Bogachiel and Calawah rivers are RED HOT for hatchery steelhead, when the rain quits long enough to let the rivers come down.

 American Whitewater - NWRI - Bogachiel Park Boundary to Hwy 101
USGS Hoh gauge, which is the closest river reporting discharge, and look for flows of around 2000 cfs.
Discharge on the Bogachiel is approximately 45% of the flow recorded on the Hoh River gauge.
There are reports of individuals who have run the Upper Bogachiel by hiking in from the Soleduck but beta is limited.

The Bogachiel Trail is one of the lesser used trails though it is only a few miles from the popular Hoh Rain Forest.
From here, the trail follows the river, going up and down along the high banks until you get to a magnificent washout, where the trail collapses down to the river bank.

FORKS – A temporary wall and additional drains are part of an interim repair plan for US 101 at the Bogachiel River, about eight miles south of Forks.

Travelling fish will hold along the entire stretch of gravel bar on the north side of the river and in the deeper water along the cut bank on the south side.
Note: While it has it's hazards, the Bogachiel from the hatchery to it's confluence with the Sol Duc at Lyndecker is a novice-level stretch.
The staff at Steelhead University recommends hiring a local guide to float any of the other rivers in the Forks area before attempting them on your own, as they are perhaps the most technical rivers in the Pacific Northwest to float.
