Bogan (pronounced /ˈbəʉ.gn̩/, to rhyme with slogan) is an Australian and New Zealand English generally derogatory slang term for a person who is, or is perceived to be, unsophisticated or of a lower class background.
Bogan is also a Irish family name, albeit an uncommon one in Australia, and is also unlikely to be the source of the term.
The bogan stereotype is closely associated with location as the perception is that bogans live in the outer suburbs of metropolitan areas or in rural areas.
