 Boggo Road Gaol Museum
The Boggo Road Gaol female prison was now to be used for the confinement of male prisoners transferred from St Helena that were serving long sentences.
A Queensland government inquiry into the conditions of state prisons found Boggo Road to be outdated and inadequate for the housing of prisoners.
The gaol was decommissioned in 1989, and officially closed its doors as a correctional centre in late November of the same year.

Boggo Road Gaol, at Annerley Road, Dutton Park, Brisbane in southern Queensland was used during WW2 as a holding location for troublesome military prisoners while they awaited their Court Marshall.
Roy Stephenson, who was at that time a Warder Clerk at Boggo Road, was firmly of the belief that the incidence of rebellious behaviour in Army Detention Centres during the war, was the fact that the enforcement of Army discipline meant that harsh measures were adopted against the prisoners collectively.
One notable prisoner held at Boggo Road was an American prisoner.

Having never been to the area before we took note of the old spooky cemeteries with gravestones reaching up from the ground in the pitch fl darkness that we passed on the way to the gaol.
The gaol is located on top of a hill opposite the local Dutton Park Police station.

The "Female Factory" was the first women's gaol, built in Brisbane's Queen Street in 1829 (at the site of today's General Post Office).
The first Brisbane gaol for males was built in Queen Street, and it was not until 1860 that Queensland's second gaol was built - this time for male and female prisoners - on Petrie Terrace.
The gaol was initially intended to be a reception centre for male prisoners prior to their transfer to the St Helena Island penal facility.

The first was a particularly gruesome staging of Titus Andronicus using the historic section of the Boggo Road Gaol in Brisbane - the part built in, 1904, I think.
I will always remember that production fondly and with some pride as I suggested the gaol as a possible setting and also did some dramaturgical rearranging of the final scenes.
I have to thank the Splinters Inc. Theatre Company of Canberra for that idea as a few years prior I ended up running the lights for their production of Cathedral of Flesh in the Adelaide Gaol in 1992.

By 1903, a new division opened to hold female inmates and was named H. Gaol for Women.
Renamed Number Two Division, this section was the scene of riots, violence and murder over the next sixty years.
