Bogoslof is the emergent summit of a submarine volcano, situated 40 km north of the main Aleutian arc.
Fire Island (New Bogoslof), a small island located about 600 m NW of Bogoslof Island, is a remnant of a lava dome that was formed in 1883.
By July 24 the new island (dome) had become attached to Bogoslof Island and the dome was estimated to be 80 to 90 m high and 300 to 400 m across.

Because adult fur seals are often at sea, a census of seal pups is made at the Pribilof and Bogoslof rookeries to examine biological trends and to estimate the total number of fur seals in Alaska.
Scientists became aware of volcanic activity on Bogoslof Island July 6 1992, when in a matter of minutes a large amount of rock was pushed up from the island creating a dome 100 meters high.
Bogoslof is a small island 2.0 km long and 0.75 km wide located 50 miles northwest of Dutch Harbor.

Bogoslof Island is an intriguing place, and I feel fortunate to be on a team of biologists surveying its wildlife.
Bogoslof is but a small part of the 4.9 million-acre Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge, just one of its thousands of islands and remote headlands that provides critical habitat for marine birds and mammals.
The refuge lands are scattered from Forrester Island in Southeast Alaska to the Barren Islands near Homer, along the Alaska Peninsula to the end of the Aleutians, across the Bering Sea to the Pribilofs and St. Matthew and north to Cape Lisburne in the Chukchi Sea.

The islands are treeless except for a few hardy Sitka spruce introduced by man. Three threatened species are endemic to the Aleutian Islands: the Aleutian Canada goose, Steller sea lion, and the Aleutian shield-fern (Polystichum aleuticum).
These islands have elevations exceeding 1,500 feet and are located approximately 275 miles southwest of Nome and 230 miles west of the Kuskokwim River deltas.
Bogoslof Island has changed size and shape a number of times since it first rose out of the Bering Sea in May 1796.

 Bogoslof Volcanoes, Alaska Science Forum
The beginnings of the island, Bogoslof volcano, actually existed in 1768 in the form of a rock, called Ship Rock, rising sharply out of the sea.
As the new island poked up, there were brilliant flames that turned night to day, and many earthquakes and loud thundering noises.
The ocean may win and totally destroy the islands, but chances are that future eruptions will restore them in some form and that birds and sea lions will continue to roost there in the intervals between eruptions.

However, the expedition anticipates being in the Bogoslof Island area during the Steller sea lion and northern fur seal pupping season, and landing on the island could [[Page 37600]] have a significant adverse impact on successful reproduction or pup- rearing.
Condition of this exemption include (1) a prohibition to land on the island, (2) the expedition vessel is not allowed to operate within 1 nm of any point on the rookery, and (3) no one is allowed to enter within 500m of any point on the rookery by any means, such as an inflatable vessel.

It may also determine why the fur seal pup population has boomed on Bogoslof Island, a small island located at the western tip of the Aleutian chain, while declining on the Pribilof Islands, roughly 300 kilometres to the north.
Bogoslof Island showed little to no habitation by northern fur seals prior to the 1970’s.
Although the sporadic distribution of northern fur seals around the world makes it difficult for scientists to accurately estimate their populations, it is commonly agreed that a majority of the world’s fur seals occur in Alaska.

The changes in the number of animals at the two locations and the different foraging strategies indicate that environmental conditions are more favorable in the oceanic habitat of Bogoslof Island than in the shallow continental shelf habitat of St. Paul.

Mortality from entanglement may have been a contributing factor in the decline of the Pribilof Islands population in the 1970s and early 1980s, but this source of mortality decreased in the late 1980s and early 1990s and is now at about half the rate observed during the decline.
