Early in 1830 Bolívar asks Sucre to preside over a congress in Bogotá, in a final attempt to hold Gran Colombia together.
In May 1830 Bolívar decides to leave Bogotá, resigning as president and planning to retire to Europe.

Bogotá was founded by the Spaniard Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada in 1538 on the site of the Chibcha Indian settlement of Bacatá, and orginally named ‘Santa Fé de Bogotá’.
Bogotá is Colombia’s largest city, and the financial, commercial, and cultural centre of the country.

No civil government was established in New Granada until 1549, when an audiencia court, a body with both executive and judicial authority, was set up in Bogotá.
By far the greatest of the conquerors was Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada, who in 1536 ascended the Magdalena River, climbed the mighty Andean cordillera, where he subdued the powerful Chibcha (an advanced native civilization), and by 1538 had founded Santa Fé de Bogotá, later known simply as Bogotá.

Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada (1495–1576), under commission from the government of Santa Marta, moved up the Magdalena River, reached the plateau of Bogotá, defeated and sacked Chibcha chiefdoms, and founded Santa Fe de Bogotá (1538).
It included Santa Marta, Cartagena, Popayán, and Santa Fe de Bogotá, the latter town becoming the seat of government for this large area.
Rodrigo de Bastidas founded Santa Marta, the first permanent settlement in what was to become Nueva Granada.
