  Bogomils
It is difficult to ascertain whether the name was taken from the reputed founder of that sect, a certain pope Bogumil or Bogomil, or whether he assumed that name after it had been given to the whole sect.
Settled along the Balkans as a kind of bulwark against the invading Bulgars, the Armenians on the contrary soon fraternized with the newcomers, whom they converted to their own views; even a prince of the Bulgarians adopted their teaching.
According to Slavonic documents the founder of this sect was a certain priest Bogumil, who "imbibed the Manichaean teaching and flourished at the time of the Bulgarian emperor Peter" (927?968).

This balanced the conflict in Kotroman's favour, as number of Bogumils had joined his side because of this.
Kotroman's Bogumils had killed Mladen in a battle in 1304.
He was inherited by, Mladen II Šubić, but this ruler was not a very capable one, so Paul Šubić himself had to lead an Army to crush the resistance in Bosnia.

And in any event, even if the Bogumils did believe the story taught in the Koran, the Bogumil sect didn't come into existance until the 10th century (when it was founded by a monk in Bulgaria) so its entirely possible that the story was adopted directly from Islamic beliefs.
The history, concerning the persecution of the Bogumil sect by the Catholics and Hungarians, and the latter conversion to Islam of the survivors in Bosnia is largely true, but I would caution against any text which attempts to portray the Bogumils as proto-Moslems.
For example, the Bogumils held that Satan, and not God had created the world, and that Satan was the brother of Jesus (a belief shared with a certain modern cult).

Bulgarian records reveal that, at this time, the population of Kosovo was composed mainly of Bogumils - a heretic sect of Roman Catholicism that was the predominant religion in Bosnia-Herzegovina as well.
In an effort to cleanse the region of heretical influences, Bogumils - who composed a majority of the Kosovar population - were persecuted.
After decades of persecution at the hands of Roman Catholics and Eastern Orthodox Christians, the Bogumils of the Balkans adopted Islam to side with the current leadership and thus achieve recognition and stability.

No less traumatic was the suppression in the 15th century of the medieval movement of the Bogumils.
As I mentioned in Chapter 5, the Bogumils, like the Cathars in France, had turned away from the official Church because they believed that the Christ was not to be sought in rituals and other expressions of devotion, but within the divine spark that represents the center of one's own being.
The Bosnian kingdom supported the Bogumils, but the severity of the crusade's assault made it easy for the Turks to conquer it.

It is true that Latin sources in Dubrovnik, and of Western provenience in general, mention the so-called Patarines, schismatics, heretics, and Bogumils in Bosna.
It should also be remembered that the whole of the Orthodox Church in Serbian lands after their fall under Turkish rule came under spiritual jurisdiction of the Patriarchate of Pec (Pech), and this, of course, included Bosna and Hercegovina.
There are no traces of any mention of Bogumils in the official records of this Patriarchate and this is probably the best indication that there were no Bogumils in Bosna and Hercegovina at all.
