The history of the development of the Bohus fort during the middle ages is not totally clear, but it appears that it was an irregular polygon with surrounding walls several metres thick and ten metres thick built of granite.
By 1800 the fortress was an unprotected ruin and in fact large amounts of stone were taken from the site by locals to build and repair their houses.

The control of both sides of the Sound means nothing which became evident to everybody involved when the Swedish navy was decisively beaten at the Battle of the Sound 1658.
The battle was fought at the narrowest part of the Sound at Elsinore at a point in time when Sweden controlled both sides including the coastal fortress at Elsinore and the opposing coastal fortress Helsingborg on the Swedish side.
The only thing that really matters is the ability to constantly have a naval precense in the Sound which Denmark had through the naval base in Copenhagen.
