Talkin' Broadway Regional News & Reviews: San Francisco - "Comedy on the Bridge" and "Brundibar" - 12/2/05
Berkeley Repertory Company is presenting a stunning world premiere production of Comedy on the Bridge and Brundibar, two arresting comic operas with libretti by Tony Kushner, music by Czech composers Hans Krasa and Bohuslav Martinu, and Maurice Sendak's eye catching sets that are some of the most ambitious that this repertory company has ever presented.
Bohuslav Martinu's music for the 40-minute chamber opera Comedy on the Bridge consists mostly of mid-20th century music that is not melodic but interesting.
There is the enticing Anjali Bhimani, trying to gain entrance to her home on the other side of the bridge.  She has an exit pass to leave the enemy country but when she crosses the bridge the sentry refuses to let her in because she has no entrance pass.

Among these were Bohuslav Martin, Andre Souris, and Edgar Varese, who stated that his work Arcana was drawn from a dream sequence.
Souris in particular was associated with the movement: he had a long, if sometimes spotty, relationship with Magritte, and worked on Paul Nouge's publication Adieu Marie.

The Concertino functions like a fully fledged miniature cello concerto in four movements, played continuously, and is in Martinu's most trenchant, modernist style.
Then we have the jazz-influenced Esquisses, and finally, after the composer adopted principles of accessibility to match his new idealogical direction, the two Studies, which marked his turning away from the piano towards large orchestral forms.

Czech Republic The traditional music of the Czech Republic has been well-documented as a result of the work of composers like Leoš Janáček, Antonín Dvořák, Bedřich Smetana, and Bohuslav Martinů, who recorded and utilized national sounds in their compositions....
Soul music is fundamentally rhythm and blues, which grew out of the African-American gospel and blues traditions during the late 1950s and early 1960s in the United States.
By 1968, Swiss rock was dying, and artists were exploring sonic innovations.

For certain, they influenced the music and compositional outlook of Bohuslav Martinů, who heard them in Prague and was inspired to a new kind of counterpoint.
Alfred Deller, of course, almost single-handedly revived the counter-tenor voice and stimulated new interest in that repertoire.
Deller's voice took some getting used to, but he was a superb singer.

Classical Net - Basic Repertoire List - Hovhaness
Hovhaness is said to have begun composing aged four; then studied with Frederick Converse at New England Conservatory and with Bohuslav Martin&; at Tanglewood.
Alan Hovhaness (also spelt Hovaness) was an American composer of Armenian and Scottish descent; and perhaps the most distinctive figure in contemporary music...
Hovhaness was also able to recycle supposedly destroyed works in later compositions: the Allegretto Grazioso third movement in his "City of Light" symphony (Symphony No. 22; 1970) originally derives from an operetta written and performed in 1920s.
