Martinu spent his last years in Italy and Switzerland working on a variety of compositions including his last opera The Greek Passion, the Parables for orchestra and the cantata The Prophecy of Isaiah.
Though Martinu believed passionately in her abilities as a musician, their relationship endured several crises, and one of them in 1938, but they were still lovers during the spring of 1939 when they were planning to leave together for the United States (Martinu was seriously considering leaving his wife).
Martinu's last composition was The Prophecy of Isaiah (1959) a work which lacks the ecstasy or excitement so often found in his music and substitutes for it a granite severity which reminds one of Stravinsky's Oedipus Rex.
