Saibai (one of the largest of the Torres Strait Islands) and Boigu are low-lying islands which were formed by alluvial deposits of sediments and mud from New Guinean rivers into the Strait accumulating on decayed coral platforms.
Moa (Banks Island) is the second-largest in the Torres Strait, and Badu (Mulgrave Island) is slightly smaller and fringed with extensive mangrove swamps.
Murray Island was the home of Eddie Mabo, whose case in the High Court of Australia established the legal existence of native title, by which the indigenous inhabitants of Australia were recogised as have rights to land which pre-dated European settlement.

Claims were complicated by the question of whether any public works had been built on the islands and whether native title existed over areas where public infrastructure had been built.

Direct comparison with Pied Imperial-Pigeon (a common species on the island) was made and provided an ideal opportunity to note the larger body bulk of the species.
Boigu Island is only a short distance from the New Guinea mainland.

I saw several groups of rainbows whilst on the island and at all times when flying they were very vocal.
Interestingly there seems to be good numbers of them on the island, its just a matter of someone getting good views of them when they are not flying across the sun.

This submission involves the sighting of a juvenile/immature Spotted Whistling Duck by a party of 10 individuals on the banks of the Boigu River (really a saltwater creek that runs north-south across the whole width of the island of Boigu dividing it into two almost equal parts) on the 3
Close views were obtained (at times to within 5m) allowing ample opportunity to be certain of the identity.
This species was not recorded from Boigu or anywhere in Torres Strait in Draffan et al.

 Cape York Birding Adventures
An optional possibility is to fly one early morning to Saibai Island or Boigu Island and return the same day.
These islands, which are located 4 km off New Guinea, could show us Grey-headed Goshawk, Papuan Flowerpecker, Eclectus Parrot and Singing Starling, and who knows what else might be there during the summer months.
