Bojutsu: The Staff and Stick Arts of Hontai Yoshin Ryu Jujutsu
According to traditional lore of the Hontai Yoshin Ryu, the bojutsu style it incorporates was originally characteristic of the Kukishin ryu bojutsu.
This is important to recognize in understanding Kukishin Ryu bojutsu as actively incorporated in the Hontai Yoshin Ryu.
Nearly identical techniques can be traced from the weaponless jujutsu forms-the core of the system, at least as it is practiced today-to weaponless defenses against both long and short swords (tachi and kodachi), and to bo and hanbo kata.

 The Evolution of Classical Jojutsu
By the end of the feudal era it is estimated that over 300 ryu had made bojutsu a part of their training, and even those bugeisha from styles which did not feature the bo were made familiar with its employment and the best defenses against it.
Most techniques for countering the bo by the well-trained swordsman involved his using the katana to slash at the wooden bo at an angle that would hack through it, cutting the bo down and significantly reducing its effectiveness.
With the protecting bands or strips of metal, the weapon was much more difficult to chop or cut and the bojutsu exponent was at a better advantage in the encounter.
