 Bok Peace Prize
Bok was interested in current events and international relations, and wanted to use his money in the service of peace.
Bok agreed, and the three set to work evaluating submissions and selecting other members for the "Jury of Award." Eventually this group of prominent citizens decided on a simple plan by an academic named Charles Levermore who called for membership in the World Court and cooperation with the League of Nations.
Because of the large amount of money associated with the prize, the amount of attention it had gotten in the press, and the shockingly internationalist tone of the winning submission, many members of Congress were suspicious that the outcome had been fixed to influence public opinion.

 The Bok Prize
The prize is named to commemorate the energetic work of Bart Jan Bok in promoting the undergraduate and graduate study of astronomy in this country, during his term as Director of the Mount Stromlo Observatory.
The prize is awarded annually, and is usually presented at the Annual Scientific Meeting of the Astronomical Society of Australia.
The decision of the assessment panel for the Bok Prize in Astronomy is final (including any decision that no entry is of sufficient merit for the Prize to be awarded in a particular year).

Edward William Bok, American editor and Pulitzer Prize-winning author, was born on October 9, 1863, in Den Helder, Netherlands.
From 1884 until 1887, Bok was the editor of The Brooklyn Magazine, and in 1886, he founded The Bok Syndicate Press.
His autobiography, The Americanization of Edward Bok, won the Gold Medal of the Academy of Political and Social Science and the Pulitzer Prize for best autobiography.

Edward William Bok (1863-1930), American editor and Pulitzer Prize-winning author, was born in Den Helder, Netherlands, on October 9, 1863.
Bok was a champion of social causes, a pioneer in the field of public sex education, prenatal education and childcare, and an environmental activist in public health and the saving of Niagara Falls.
Edward William Bok died in Lake Wales within sight of the Tower on January 9, 1930, and is now buried at the base of the tower.

 The Bruce Medalists: Bart Bok
Bart Bok was born in the Netherlands and educated at the Universities of Leiden and Groningen, earning his doctorate at the latter under P.J. van Rhijn.
Working closely with his wife, Priscilla Fairfield Bok, he studied the structure and evolution of star clusters and the Galaxy, mapping the spiral arms of the Milky Way, especially the Carina region, and the Magellanic Clouds.

Established in honor of the late Professor Vasil A. Popov of Bulgaria, the prize is awarded every three years to an outstanding young approximation theorist with at most six years of professional experience.
This year’s prize will be awarded in May at the Eleventh International Conference in Approximation Theory, in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
Named in honor of the former president of Merck Research Laboratories, the award was created in 2003 to recognize an outstanding discovery or significant advance in the field of neuroscience.

The Reginald H. Phelps Prize Fund was established by Edgar Grossman, ABE '66, founder and first president of the Harvard Extension Alumni Association (HEAA) and the first Extension representative to the Associated Harvard Alumni.
The Dean's Prize for the outstanding ALM thesis in the behavioral sciences was awarded to Franz Schneider for his work "Genetics and Schizophrenia." This extensive review of the current state of research on schizophrenia tackles the age-old nature/nurture question, and finds current genetic explanations lacking.
Awarded from the income from a fund established by the family and friends of the late Judith Wood who, though born with cystic fibrosis, beset with diabetes and blindness, took Extension School courses as long as she was able, and inspired many other students with her courage and fortitude.

 Bok Peace Plan
On July 1, 1923, Bok established a $100,000 fund titled the the American Peace Award.
On Feb. 4, 1924, however, the Policy Committee of the Bok Peace Award decided on a simple plan by an academic named Charles Levermore (1856-1927).
Although the U.S. Senate examined the Bok Plan, the committee dropped its investigation after the death of former U.S. President Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924) and allowed the presentation of the award.

Later in 1921, the three women became close friends, meeting several evenings a week in Greenwich Village as part of the New Women movement, which focused on political power and economic change.
In 1923, working with ER, Lape administered the competition for the Bok Peace Prize.
However, in January 1924, the Senate began investigating charges that the Bok Peace Prize was the tool of "foreign governments or foreign institutions." Lape testified before the Senate and identified ER and Narcissa Vanderlip as two of the most influential members of the selection committee.

 Eric Chaisson Biographical Sketch
During his tenure as associate professor at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, Chaisson's research concentrated largely on the radio astronomical study of interstellar gas clouds.
This work won him fellowships from the National Academy of Sciences and the Sloan Foundation, as well as Harvard's Bok Prize for original contributions to astrophysics and Harvard's Smith-Weld Prize for literary merit.
He has also held research and teaching positions at MIT and Wellesley College and, before joining Tufts, was a scientist on the senior staff and director of educational programs at the Space Telescope Science Institute at Johns Hopkins University.

President Faunce, of Brown, thinks the studying done for the award will widen the American horizon, as does Chancellor Emeritus Jordan, of Leland Stanford.
