Bokmal, also called riksmal [national language] and Dano-Norwegian, was greatly influenced by Danish, which was the dominant language of officialdom when Norway was under Danish rule (1397–1814).
The language of the cities, the official and professional classes, and literature, bokmal came to differ greatly from the Norwegian spoken by the common people.
Both bokmal and nynorsk are employed by the government, the schools, and the mass media, but bokmal is by far the more widely used of the two, especially in education and literature.

Although the use of one version or the other does not seem to have any logic to an outsider, it probably has to do with the subject of the stamp, and the use of one or other language expression in connection with that subject.

 Norden
North Germanic languages--Danish, Swedish, the Norwegian languages of Bokmal and Nynorsk, Icelandic, and Faroese--are commonly spoken throughout Norden.
To an extent, Danish, Swedish, and Bokmal are mutually intelligible, while Danish is spoken as a second language in the former Danish colonies of Iceland and the Faeroes and Swedish is a common first language in Finland and Karelia.
These languages are exceptionally unlikely to replace non-Germanic languages, much less (as some enthusiasts suggest) coalesce to form a single Scandinavian language; still, they create a rudimentary Nordic linguistic community.

 EdGate Summer Games
The people of Norway speak two main forms of Norwegian.
One is called "Bokmal," or "Danoo-Norwegian." The other is called "Nynorsk," or "New Norwegian." Because these dialects are very similar to one another, the Norwegian government tried to combine them into one official language called "Samnorsk." Despite the government's efforts, the project was unsuccessful and now both languages are considered official.
The main language children speak at school is Bokmal.
