Quetta lies at 1,525 m/5,000 ft above sea level, 35 km/20 mi northwest of the Bolan Pass; population (1991) 350,000.
Quetta is the legendary stronghold of the western frontier.
Quetta was first mentioned in the 11th century when it was captured by Mahmud of Ghazni on one of his invasions of the subcontinent.

Previously the trans-Indus portion of the new district comprising the tahsils of Bannu, Marwat, and Isakhel, had belonged to the Dera Ismail Khan district, with Edwardesabad, then Dalip Nagar, as its head-quarters and the cis-Indus portion, comprising of the sub-division of Kachhi or Mianwali, to the old Leiah district.
Mahmud of Ghazni is said to have ravaged the district, expelling its Hindu inhabitants, and reducing the country to a desert.

From Nushki (southwest of Quetta city) to Dalbandin (southwest of Nushki), the division consists of a sandy level plain; and farther west beyond Dalbandin, Chagai district is mainly desert.
Commanding the Bolan and Khojak passes, Quetta was occupied by the British in 1876; a residency was founded by Sir Robert Sandeman, and the town developed around its strongly garrisoned army station.

According to Dawn, paramilitary forces launched a crackdown on armed men in the coalmine area of Margat in the Bolan district of Balochistan province on January 8 after the rocket attack on Mach town a day earlier.
In a similar incident, on January 7, three SF personnel were injured in a grenade attack by unidentified assailants in the Muttur area of Trincomalee district.
Elsewhere, on January 8, unidentified militants shot at and wounded a civilian at Kongba Kshetri Leikai in the Imphal East district.

QUETTA, Aug 30: National highways linking Quetta and other parts of the country were blocked by transporters who parked a large number of buses and coaches on the Bolan Pass and Lakh Pass as their strike entered its third consecutive day on Monday.
The Quetta City District Government Nazim Mohammad Rahim Kakar denied the transporters' claims about the lack of facilities at the new bus stand site and said that the Quetta Development Authority had provided adequate facilities there.
The people in Quetta and other parts of the province are facing great difficulties because of the transporters' strike as no passenger vehicle was able to leave the city.
