The train arrived on time, and I was met by three men with a car who drove me 100 km north to the old town of Bolgar, the capital of the old Bulgar kingdom on the Volga.
We then made a stop at another Bulgar town, where the others did some detecting, I had packed my machine away for safe transit and did not feel inclined to unpack it particularly as we had not had anything to eat and there seemed little likely hood of any food either.
We where supposed to go to the old Russian town of Old Mayna on the next day (Tuesday) but the ferryman did not turn up so it was another day of no detecting and lying around the camp.
