Bolling Field was officially opened July 1, 1918 and was named in honor of the first high-ranking air service officer killed in World War I, Col. Raynal C. Bolling.
Bolling Air Force Base was assigned to the Military Airlift Command in 1976.
Bolling Field units also provides ceremonial support to the White House, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Secretary of the Air Force and the Air Force Chief of Staff, mainly through 11th Wing, The United States Air Force Honor Guard and The United States Air Force Band.

 Bolling AFB
Bolling AFB was named after Colonel Raynal C. Bolling, the first high ranking American officer to be killed in World War I. Bolling was dedicated in 1918 and at differrent points had such individuals as Billy Mitchell, Henry "Hap" Arnold, Carl Spaatz, Ira Eaker, and Jimmy Doolittle as its personnel.
In addition to the AFDW, Bolling AFB is host to a variety of organizations representing a cross-section of the Air Force, from base-level offices to Headquarters for the Office of Special investigations, the Air Force Surgeon General and the Air Force Chief of Chaplains.
Bolling also serves as a diverse military community, housing families of all services and hosting one of the largest defense organizations, the Defense Intelligence Agency Center.

Bolling was the first high-ranking Air Service Officer killed in World War I on March 26, 1918.
Bolling's 1st Aero Company, organized in November 1915, was busted into Federal service in July 1916 to support General John J. Pershing's strike against the revolutionary forces of Pancho Villa in northern Mexico.
Bolling Field became a separate command in December of that year, reporting directly to Air Staff.

One of the oldest flying establishments in the USA, the base was constructed beginning in May 1918, becoming Bolling Field two months later.
It accommodated flying proficiency operations for the Washington area during the 1920s and 1930s/ Bolling was upgraded shortly before World War II as a protective base for the vicinity of Washington, as well as training aircrews destined for combat operations overseas.
Additionally the base was the main facility for air transportation of senior military and political figures until 1945, when this function moved to the larger base at Andrews.

 Aircraft: Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress, Return to Glory
The aircraft returned to the United States on 10 May 1945 and was stationed at Bolling Field, Washinton D.C. A picture in the museum shows the plane on the ramp at Bolling Field still with its MAAF markings.
In June of that same year it was transferred to the government of Bolivia, the interior was modified to a freight hauling configuration with a cargo door, and it was flown throughout South America for twenty-five years.
The plane was reacquired by the USAF Museum and flown to the United States in January 1981 for display at the March AFB Museum.

 Andrews AFB
Andrews AFB is adjacent to Camp Springs, in Prince George County, Maryland, and is 10 miles Southeast of Washington, DC.
In a major reorganization, Headquarters Command, U.S. Air Force, was disbanded July 1, 1976, restructured under the Military Airlift Command as the 76th Airlift Division and transferred its headquarters from Bolling AFB to Andrews.
On Oct. 1, 1985, the 76th Airlift Division was inactivated as the result of activation of the Headquarters Air Force District of Washington at Bolling AFB.

On December 1, 1948, the 11th bomb group was activated at Carswell AFB and assigned to the 7th Bomb Wing.
Retired CMSgt Ron Foster was involved in this deployment and he wrote that it was in 1956.) Won the SAC Bombing Competition and the Fairchild Trophy in 1954, 1956 and 1960.
It was activated on July 15, 1994 at Bolling AFB, Washington, DC.

A portion of the Bolling Air Force Base (AFB) in Washington, D.C. lies adjacent to the Potomac River.
The intent of the project is to contribute to the protection of the Potomac River and ultimately the Chesapeake Bay, from further deterioration caused by non-point source pollution runoff from the base and increased siltation due to the continuous erosion of the Bolling AFB's Potomac River shoreline.
This $4,100,000 project was funded under DOD is Legacy Resource Management Program which provides for all DOD agencies to,"establish programs for the restoration and rehabilitation of altered or degraded habitats." The project was accomplished as part of the federal facilities compliance effort under the Chesapeake Bay Program, an EPA initiative.
