Bolo (computer game) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bolo is a video game originally developed for the Apple II computer by Synergistic Software in 1982.
An update inspired by the original was created for the BBC Micro computer by Stuart Cheshire in 1987, and later ported to the Macintosh in its most popular incarnation.
It is thus a very early example of a real-time tactics game.

Bolo Paper #1 by Hillbilly Bob
Bolo is ostensibly a tank-based shoot-'em-up, but an experienced player will elaborate on the intricate and discrete elements of strategy that become apparent after one plays the game for a few weeks.
The most intriguing aspect of watching someone play Bolo is to observe how the player can carry on a real life conversation as whoever he normally is, while simultaneously maintaining a different role in the Bolo game.
I maintain that the expression of the self evident in Bolo, and which I take to be evident in much of interaction over computers, is not so much a changing of the self but a different medium for expression of the same self.

There have been computer games for the Mac since the beginning (*who can tell me what the first Mac game was?*).
Early on, the computer game business wasn't as well-funded as it is now, and most developers were simply hobbyists.
Another neat game action game which doesn't require a computer capable of displaying the most complex graphics is Bolo, a game most of you will probably be familiar with.

The Linux Game Tome   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
LinBolo is an implementation of the popular Macintosh network game "Bolo" from the early to middle nineties from scratch on the Windows and Linux platforms.
Bolo has been described as a game that, "takes an instant to learn but a lifetime to master." It objectives appear simple, to capture and hold all bases on the map yet there are a wide varieties of strategies and counter strategies that can be employed.
I'm wondering if the game has been emulated to run on modern PC's, with the same interface as it had back in 1985 when I could understand how computers and software actually worked.

The "Extensible Game AI" Thread (Summary)
Allow the AI to interact with the game engine thru some form of message passing/member functions/etc so if they really want to erase their hard-drives they are going to have to work at it.
Considering that so many computer game developers and publishers in the recent past, have prioritized AI development behind glitz: graphics, animation, frame-rate, killer music and sound; and network and mulit-player play has reduced the role of the computer AI opponent in games; then I personally do not hold much hope that it will happen soon.
For a game on a unix system I would definately use IPC, as it would solve almost all of the security problems (it would run setuid nobody), the communication could be made fast enough and the programmer could use almost any language they liked.

I originally stuck to "one person, one vision" games, as that is what is most interesting to me, but I eventually decided to include ports as well (though undoubtedly ports carry less weight).
Games for modern platforms are mentioned only when the programmer has written at least one classic title.
Used for games ported from other formats or when a game was designed by someone else--implies a lack of creative control.

Well to make a game of something with similar quality it would take up the entire calc as it would have to deal with the physics of multiple shots (3 shot, 5 shot, pineapple, crazy ivan, scatter shot, etc) would be very difficult to run fast.
