 MILITARY BOLO KNIVES
As a direct result of the experience of U.S. troops in the Philippine Insurrection, the Army developed the Model 1904 Bolo Knife, a heavy curved knife that proved useful in the jungles for cutting through dense, tangled vegetation and as a weapon.
The scabbard for this bolo consisted of a white-pine body covered with tubular woven olive-drab cotton duck and rawhide at the tip and a metal throat with a catch that holds the bolo to the scabbard.
Bolos were not issued to every soldier but a few were distributed to each unit in accordance with the T/O for the type of unit deployed and their mission.

 [No title]
So many Model 1917 bolos were made during 1917 and 1918 that they were still available for issue in limited quantities throughout World War II, and unused surplus stocks of bolos and their sheaths continued to turn up in warehouses as late as the 1970s.
Model 1917 bolos are still so common that their collector value in excellent condition is less than it would probably cost to make them new today.
Long ago I saw a reference to army machine gunners using their bolos to clear brush and small trees out of the fields of fire in front of their emplacements, but that was all I knew.

The knife was used extensively in the fall of 2001 limbing smaller sticks as well as some felling and bucking.
Heavy machetes like the Tramontina Bolo also work well for such brush work but because the steel is fairly soft (sping hard) the edge retention is relatively low.

Bolo punch - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bolo punches are not one of the traditional boxing punches (jab, uppercut, hook and cross) and they are seldom used; much less so during a combination.
When asked once how he came to develop the wide sweeping uppercut, Garcia said when he was a youth he used to cut sugarcane in the Philippine Islands, with a bolo knife, which he wielded in a sweeping uppercut fashion.
Two of the most famous cases of a fighter using the bolo punch were when Leonard avenged his loss to Roberto Duran (see "The No Más Fight") and when Leonard drew with Thomas Hearns in their second fight (see: Sugar Ray Leonard vs. Thomas Hearns).
