I think what he meant was that he prefers the neck thru rather than the bolt on.
Also, the 201 is a bolt on neck vs. the neck-thru of the 301, which I also prefer.
Just to clarify, the way the neck is attached to the body doesn't concern me. Set neck, bolt on, neck through...doesn't matter to me. The way I see it, if I can get great tone and playability with a bolt on, then why would I need a neck through?

You can replace the neck on a bolt-on, but it will cost a wad, and a bolt-on should be a lot cheaper than a neck-through or set neck, anyway.
Most of us who build neck thru or set-neck instruments realize that the main pitfall of doing this is that the usefulness of the instrument is totally dependent on the stability of the neck.
If you break the neck on a neck thru the guitar is pretty much ruined.

 6 Bolt-On and Neck-thru? - Musician Forums
Bolt ons mass produced are cheaper, but I'd say in single construction a neck thru is. Making a single neck thru also seems to be less time consuming, really.
these basses genraly have better sustain than boltons but not as good as neck throughs
Many say neck-through have more sustain, but I've heard that if the neck pocket is done just right, a bolt-on can have just as much sustain.

Alembic Club: Set neck vs through neck?
I have a couple of basses alembic and Music man, now they sound completely different but I couldn't listen to them comparitively and say that the reason the alembic sounds and sustains better is because it has a through neck rather than a bolt on neck...
If you had a bolt-on with a (grunt) maple body and maple neck it will probably sound a lot like a thru-body instrument with a maple neck section.
Consider that a neck laminate is virtually the length of your bass and the thickness of the neck and body so there you have a much greater surface area of glued joints at the interfaces between the laminate woods.

 Headspace in a .45 (Norman F. Johnson)
On a rimless BOTTLENECK cartridge, headspace is a linear measure- ment from the closed bolt to a datum line that is located some- where on the shoulder-to-neck slope of the cartridge.
On a rimmed cartridge it is from the face of the cutout in the chamber (that which surrounds and encloses the case rim) to the closed bolt face.
On a rimless STRAIGHT case it is measured from the bolt face to end of the straight portion of the chamber where the case mouth is located.

Mailgate: rec.music.makers.guitar: Re: Looking to buy a high-end electric guitar (neck thru, 24
Just for the record, I think you're confusing "set neck" or "glued-in neck" for "neck-thru." All of the non-bolt-on guitars you've listed are set neck, i.e., the neck is glued in but it basically stops at the body, plus a bit of tenon.
The neck on a true neck-thru guitar, either solid or laminated, runs the entire length of the guitar from the headstock all the way to the tail (or at least the bridge) and typically has the rest of the body shape glued onto the sides of the neck as wings.
His bodies are somewhat more LP-shaped, but they are double cutaway and he does slab bodies in a addition to carved tops.

 Neck-Thru / Bolt on - Musician Forums
Not really, depends how you like your neck held on, neck-thru's tend to be held by strong glue which sometimes isnt as strong, therefore the neck becoming loose in extreme cases.
well, neck through means the neck goes right thru the body as the name would indicate and the sides of the body are glued to the center peice of the body wich is part of the neck.
some set necks can be set far into the body giving the manufacturer the ability to shave the heel down so it can be almost like the joint of a neck thru, but this isnt typical.

Not only for tone but duarability, but when u start to shred the higher frets, especailly sweeps, a neck thru provides no heel obstruction and a smooth slide/ ascend descend of the hand.
A set neck with the tonepro's bridge get's the sustain on a set at about the same place as the neck-thru's though.

 Guitar F o r u m : guitar necks
Most guitars have "bolt-on" necks or some variation where the neck and body are two separate pieces that are joined together with bolts or glue or both.
i think what RL is refering to is a set neck(a long neck that is glued in all the way to the bottom of the body) whereas a neck-thru is an axe made from one piece of timber(no glue, bolts,or any of that jazz)
On a "neck through body" guitar the single piece of wood that makes up the neck continues all the way to the end of the "body" of the guitar, and two separate pieces are attached above and below it to make up the remainder of the guitar body.
