This is indicated by the place names in the area, for instance the passage across the Ings at the conjunction of the River Dearne and Don east of Mexborough was known as the 'Street Ford' and later 'Strafford Sands'.
Villages such as Adwick Upon Dearne, Bolton Upon Dearne and Wath Upon Dearne sprang up during this period due to their defensive positions on spurs of land above the flood plain.
Although much of the outer brickwork has been disfigured and covered by pebbledash, the small Norman church at Adwick Upon Dearne is worthy of note because it possesses one of the few Norman bellcotes to survive in the country.
