Bolus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In medicine, a bolus (from Latin bolus, ball) is a large dose of a medication that is given (usually intravenously by direct infusion injection or gravity drip) at the beginning of treatment to raise blood-level concentrations to a therapeutic level.
Diabetics and health care professionals use bolus to describe a dosage of fast-acting insulin intended to "cover" a meal (as opposed to basal, which is either a dose of slow-acting insulin or a continuously pumped small quantity of fast-acting insulin, intended to "cover" the glucose output of the liver).
In biology, a bolus is any kind of ball-shaped organic structure of an organism or of its discharged substances.

Pharmacology Math: delivering bolus medications in pediatrics
Administering a bolus medication over a specific time frame via buretrol or syringe pump is one possible medication delivery method.
Generally, administering a bolus dosage means delivering a given amount in a "shorter" time, such as IV push.
The drip factor of the tubing (buretrol) is 60 gtts/cc or minidrip.

The current study was conducted to determine the efficacy and persistence of the commercial Ivomec SR Bolus on adult horn flies feeding on the blood from treated cattle and on larval horn flies breeding in the manure produced by these cattle.
The single bolus treatment resulted in less than 10% mortality of adult horn flies feeding on the blood of the treated animals over the 21 wk trial.
From these studies, we conclude that a single Ivomec SR Bolus used as an anthelmintic treatment can be expected to provide significant control of immature horn flies developing in the manure, but not of adults feeding on the treated cattle.

Super Bolus   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
A Super Bolus is created when some of the basal insulin delivery is stopped or partially reduced, and delivered instead as additional bolus insulin on top of a normal carb or correction bolus.
The increased bolus delivery prevents the postmeal spike as shown in the graphic to the right, while hypoglycemia is avoided by the rapid reduction in basal delivery equal to the amount of insulin which is added to the usual premeal bolus.
The 9-unit Super Bolus prevents the blood sugar from spiking after the cereal is eaten, while the rapid basal reduction prevents the blood sugar from going low later.

In the VMAC trial, when symptomatic hypotension occurred, Natrecor was discontinued and subsequently could be restarted at a dose that was reduced by 30% (with no bolus administration) once the patient was stabilized.
The recommended dose of Natrecor is an IV bolus of 2 mcg/kg followed by a continuous infusion of 0.01 mcg/kg/min.
In those patients, the infusion dose of Natrecor was increased by 0.005 mcg/kg/min (preceded by a bolus of 1 mcg/kg), no more frequently than every 3 hours up to a maximum dose of 0.03 mcg/kg/min.

However, matching a bolus to the variable absorption time of a meal can be challenging.
An extended bolus can be given in any amount to the tenth of a unit up to 25 units; then, the bolus can be extended over a time period of 15 minutes to 24 hours.
This could be achieved by infusing the entire amount of the bolus, over the extended time period, or dividing the required bolus into a percentage taken before the meal, and the rest extended over the desired time period.

Automatic bolus detection techniques use a centrically reordered k-space sequence because the center of k-space contributing to the contrast information on the final image should coincide with the arterial peak of the contrast.
