Sandwiched between the densely forested mountains of Bolu Dag (1,829m/6,002ft) to the north and the Köroglu Daglari (2,378m/7,804ft) to the south, the provincial capital of Bolu is situated in the Bolu Ovasi, a small basin west of the Bolu Kargi depression.
Bolu in fact has been a thriving commercial center ever since ancient times and was a halt on the trade route to central Anatolia - coach services between Istanbul and Ankara still break their journey here.
Under Theodosius II (408-450) the town became the capital of the new province of Honorias, and in the Byzantine period was the seat of a metropolitan bishop.

BOLU, May 24 (A.A) - Two American families composed of 11 people including seven children, who were stranded because of the landslide caused by the flood in Yedigoller area in northwestern Bolu province, were rescued on Saturday evening.
The sown fields in the Ugurludag and Bayat counties of Corum province were flooded and the flood started to threaten the rice planted grounds in Dodurga and Oguzlar counties of Corum and in the city center of Osmancik county.

The disaster was followed by more than 1,300 aftershocks, culminating in the second quake - which shook Düzce and Kaynasli counties in the north-western province of Bolu, some 100 km's to the east of Izmit for 30 seconds - at 18h57 on 12 November 1999 and rated 7.2 on the Richter scale.
The destruction in Bolu and Düzce was widespread, with the total affected population between 150,000 and 180,000; early assessments indicated that some 800 buildings have been heavily damaged and the Government has estimated the financial cost of the quake at US$ 10 billion.
Besides Bolu and Düzce, the neighboring districts of Kaynasli (70% of the town is considered to be destroyed), Akcakoca, Cumayeri, Gümüsova, Yigilca and Gölkaya have been affected.
