Bomarzo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bomarzo is a town and comune of Viterbo province (Lazio, central Italy), in the lower valley of the Tiber at 42°29N 12°15E, 263 m (863 ft) above sea‑level, with 1609 inhabitants according to the 2003 census.
It is the work of Pier Francesco Orsini, Duke of Bomarzo (1528‑1588), a patron of the arts and greatly devoted to his wife Julia Farnese; when she died, he created the gardens.
In fact Bomarzo is more the product of a philosopher than an architect, and it is constructed as a journey, rather than a setting for social life, a journey to be undertaken perhaps alone, but certainly in silence, as the inscription on the plinth of a sphinx near the starting point enjoins.

the valley of Bomarzo; two-faced Janus; the dragon fights the lion and lioness; Neptune (de Mandiargues)
This 16th century pleasure-garden— commissioned by a Duke who was criticized by his contemporaries for not even financing a church for his community— was carved into boulders that were already strewn across a valley near a country town north of Rome.
Although the story of Bomarzo is shrouded in mystery (the identities of its architects and artists is not known), a walk along its terraced path would unfold a narrative that engages the imagination of the visitor.

The Teatro Colon is mounting a production of Alberto Ginastera's second opera Bomarzo, opening in Buenos Aires on 13 June, in honour of the 20th anniversary of the composer's death on 25 June 1983.
Ginastera's Bomarzo is a powerful and disturbing portrayal of Orsini, a 16th century Italian Duke, whose life flashes before him as he dies from poisoning.
Bomarzo's estate north of Rome can still be visited, including its "Sacred Wood of Monsters" - grotesque carvings and rock sculptures of animals - linking us down the centuries with the Duke's obsessive and tortured mind.

Lee Sandlin - The Monster Park at Bomarzo
Bomarzo is in southern Umbria, between Florence and Rome -- it's one of those remote hilltop villages that look about ten thousand years old.
The Monster Gardens are the work of an eccentric (to put it mildly) aristocrat of the 16th century, who had part of his estate filled up with bizarre and surreal statuary -- a dragon fighting lions, a rearing sea-monster, sinister quasi-Roman deities, a gigantic screaming face.
When we told our hotel manager in Florence we were going to see Bomarzo he made a face and said "Well, if that's the sort of thing that interests you..."
