		The district is bordered on the north by Koinadugu district, on the east by the Republic of Guinea, the southeast by Kailahun and Kenema districts in the east and southeast and by Tonkolili and Moyamba districts in the west.
		Kono district is well known as the main economic activity there centres around mining of diamonds which is widely believed to be the dominant source of funding for the ten year old brutal civil war, the country experienced.
		It is bordered on the north and northeast by the Republic of Guinea, Bombali and Port Loko districts, on the south and on the west by the Republic of Guinea and Atlantic Ocean.

		The SLA has completed repairs to the Tompary Ferry in Bombali District, making it now possible to reach northern Bombali District by road from Kambia and also north from Makeni, as the bridges on the Makeni-Kamakwie route are now repaired.
		Bombali assessment planning is ongoing and the assessment team will deploy to the field from December 3rd - 7th.
		In a bid to address the vast range of humanitarian issues in newly accessible districts, UN agencies are planning to open a UN House in Makeni, which should be operational by end of January 2002.

		Bombali District is the Headquarters for the Northern Province and Makeni is the main Town.
		Port Loko District is also a District in the Northern Province where we have two churches and schools in two of its major towns — Lunsar and Lungi respectively.
		Kenema is the District Headquarter for the Eastern Province and is an Islamic strong hold.

	Amnesty International Report 2002 - Africa - SIERRA LEONE
		In the early part of the year there was continuing conflict along the border between Sierra Leone and Guinea, with intermittent attacks by RUF forces on refugee camps in Guinea and air bombardments by the Guinean armed forces on the RUF in Sierra Leone.
		According to reports, early in the year several girls and women in Koidu, in Kono district, were forced to become ''wives'' to a single RUF combatant, and women from a group of 80 refugees returning to Koinadugu district from Guinea were assigned to RUF combatants and raped.
		Kamakwie, Bombali district, was attacked on 26 January and at least 12 civilians were killed.

		The establishment of the USAID funded and managed Peace Diamond Alliance (PDA)[4] launched in December 2002 has a formal membership of miners/diggers, dealers, exporters and aims at coordinating the diamond sector to ensure that mining is done in a responsible, transparent, accountable manner that benefits the membership and the community as a whole.
		Early marriages are very much prevalent in the district as a result of the influence of the mining activities.

	MSF: Medical Co-ordinator Assistant
		MSF Holland (MSFH) has been present in Sierra Leone since 1995, working in the districts of Kambia, Bombali and Tonkolili in the north of the country and in the Western Area, including the capital Freetown.
		Following the violation of the Lome ceasefire accord and resumption of hostilities by the RUF in May 2000, MSFH was forced to suspend its activities in the rebel held territories in the north.
		Since March 2001, MSF reopened Bombali District with a team in Makeni.

		In every district in which I conducted research during the TRC hearings in 2003 (Port Loko, Bombali, Kambia, Tonkolili, and Moyamba), ex-combatants were almost universally fearful of the TRC, suspecting that information they gave to the Commission would find its way to the Special Court.

	UNAMSIL
		Daniel Opande, yesterday witnessed the disarmament of Revolutionary United Front (RUF) combatants in Kamakwie, Bombali District, as the exercise concludes in the district.
		Kamakwie is the last chiefdom to disarm in Bombali District.
		In his address, the Paramount Chief expressed concerns over the poor condition of the roads and bridges linking the area to Makeni and other districts.

	Rebel Action on the Kamakwie Road
		Most affected are towns and villages in the Bombali district, about 180 kilometres from the capital, where armed remnants of the junta, which was deposed in February by ECOMOG, are on the rampage.
		On 6 September 1998 the town of Kamalu, near Kamakwie, in Bombali District, was attacked by rebel forces.

	UNAMSIL
		Concerned about the slow pace of disarmament by the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) in one of Sierra Leone's districts, members of the Security Council on 3 October urged the rebel group to participate fully in the country's disarmament, demobilization and reintegration (DDR) programme.
		Although the DDR programme was progressing reasonably well, Council members expressed concern about the slow progress of the RUF's disarmament in Bombali district, according to Ambassador Richard Ryan of Ireland, which holds the rotating Presidency of the 15-member body for the month of October.
		At the moment 14 RUF has disarmed in the Bombali District while 624 CDF has disarmed in the Bo District.

		In the Koinadugu District, Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) has acquired land for the construction of four houses in Fardugu as part of their programme to facilitate the resettlement of amputees and war-wounded.
		Some 20,000 families in Kailahun District and nearly 23,000 in Kono received the farming package consisting of 20kg of upland seed-rice, 20kg of inland valley swamp seed-rice, 10kg of groundnut seed and one hoe.
		WV distributed farm inputs to13,600 farm families in seven chiefdoms in Kono District and one chiefdom in Kailahun District.

	Sierra Leone Elections Results: May 2004 Local Government
		District but it is clear from preliminary results available to us that again in this former APC bastion, the SLPP has swept more seats in this district than the APC.
		We are yet to confirm the exact number of seats won by each Party here but current indications show that this will be the only district in the whole of Sierra Leone that the APC will be controlling with a majority number of councillors.
