  Bombardment - LoveToKnow 1911
It is, therefore, obvious that mere bombardment can only achieve its object when the amount of suffering inflicted upon non-combatants is sufficient to break down their resolution, and when the commandant permits himself to be influenced or coerced by the sufferers.
A threat of bombardment will sometimes induce a place to surrender, but instances of its fulfilment being followed by success are rare; and, in general, with a determined commandant, bombardments fail of their object.
Bombardments are, however, frequently resorted to in order to test the temper of the garrison and the civil population, a notable instance being that of Strassburg in 1870.

CRSQ Notes - Extraterrestrial Bombardment of the Inner Solar System
Previously, Dr. DeYoung and I proposed that extraterrestrial bombardment of the Earth occurred with the onset of the Flood (Froede and DeYoung, 1996).
However, the greatest period of extraterrestrial bombardment, for both the Moon and Earth, occurred later in their history according to uniformitarian scientists, who continue to discover new sources of information for age-dating this period in time.
It was during the terminal lunar cataclysm that the Moon underwent massive bombardment based on the analysis of the over 1,700 large (12.5 to 750 mile diameter) impact craters on its surface (Cohen, Swindle, and Kring, 2000).

SPACE.com -- Evidence for Ancient Bombardment of Earth
In sedimentary rock that had previously been dated to 3.7 billion years ago or older, researchers found an isotope of the element tungsten in amounts that do not typically occur on Earth and so are thought to be of extraterrestrial origin.
The whole question of the bombardment is important because many researchers believe life would have found it difficult to get going under such chaotic conditions.
An important question for biologists is whether life arose on Earth only after the bombardment, or whether it might have begun earlier and either had its development throttled by the influx of asteroids and comets or, possibly, been reset entirely.

SPACE.com -- New Insight into Earth's Early Bombardment
Known as the "Late Heavy Bombardment," or LHB, this period of heightened meteorite activity would have had important implications for life on Earth, since it coincides roughly with the time that scientists think the first primitive bacteria appeared on our planet.
It's possible that life emerged only after the bombardments slackened, or if it began earlier, it might have been disrupted or even reset by the intense hail of meteorites.
Another intriguing possibility, say Duncan and others, is that rather than being vehicles of death and destruction, meteorites carried life, or molecules important for the emergence of life, to Earth.

First World War.com - Battles - The First and Second Naval Bombardment of the Dardanelles, 1915
A purely naval bombardment of the Straits had long been recognised in professional naval circles as a most difficult undertaking.
Even should the naval bombardment prove successful the absence of ground troops would prevent the British from gaining command of the shorelines - and in the absence of supplies from the shore the naval fleet would necessarily have to return home to refuel and restock.
While the outer forts were themselves seized by marines the Allied force could not effective silence the 24 Turkish mobile batteries that poured shellfire from the heights and served as highly effective protection for the elaborate minefield defence set in place in The Narrows.

They also found that carbon and hydrogen proved useful as moderators in slowing the bombarding neutrons and that slow neutrons produced the best results since neutrons moving more slowly remained in the vicinity of the nucleus longer and were therefore more likely to be captured.
