Sir Robert Grant (1779-1838) governed Bombay from 1835 to 1838 and was responsible for the construction of a number of roads between Bombay and the hinterland.
Bombay began to attract fortune hunters by the hundreds and the population had swelled from 13,726 in 1780 to 644,405 in 1872, in a little less than a hundred years.
By 1906 the population of Bombay was to become 977,822.

Progressive Dawoodi Bohras: Nathwani cases - Tales of Harassment
When the petition came up for hearing, it was stated by the counsel on behalf of the school management that they desired to withdraw the petition unconditionally and that Taherali would be reinstated in the school and arrears of salary would be paid.
They explained to the deputationists that the columns were open to both the sections of the Bohras and the orthodox could avail of them to contradict any facts which they felt were not true and also put their case before the community.
In view of all the circumstances we are satisfied that the priestly class has by these handbills forbidden Dawoodi Bohras from reading the 'Bombay Samachar' on pain of social boycott so that they may not hear any criticism of the conduct of the priestly class.

Mehta: Bombay changed its name, or rather the name was changed for Bombay in 1995 by the Shiv Sena, a Hindu nationalist party.
The politics of the Shiv Sena are nativist and exclusionist, which runs against the cosmopolitan spirit of the city of Bombay.
While I don't think this take on Bombay is the most exciting thing ever, I do think Suketu Metha does a good job as a kind of cultural ambassador for the new, cosmopolitan India.
