World War II, also known as the Second World War, was a mid-20th-century conflict that engulfed much of the globe and is generally considered the largest and deadliest continuous war in human history.
Post–World War II Europe was partitioned into Western and Soviet spheres of influence, the former undergoing economic reconstruction under the Marshall Plan and the latter becoming satellite states of the Soviet Union.
The end of World War II is seen by many as the end of the United Kingdom's position as a global superpower and the emergence of the United States and the Soviet Union as the dominant powers in the world.
