B programming language - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
B was the name of a programming language developed at Bell Labs.
It is almost extinct, as it was replaced by the C language.
However it is possible that its name may be based on Bon, an earlier but unrelated, and rather different, programming language which Thompson designed for use on Multics.

 CSCI524 Programming Language Principles
Languages are classified as low level if they are close to machine code and high level if each language statement corresponds to many machine code instructions (though this could also apply to a low level language with extensive use of macros, in which case it would be debatable whether it still counted as low level).
Orthogonality in a programming language means that a relatively small set of primitive constructs can be combined in a relatively small number of ways to build the control and data structures of the language.
C is often described, with a mixture of fondness and disdain, as "a language that combines all the elegance and power of assembly language with all the readability and maintainability of assembly language".

JakeO.com - History of the C Programming Language
The C programming language and its direct descendants are by far the most popular programming languages used in the world today.
This paper will explore the history of the C programming language and discuss the different aspects of the language in an attempt to determine why this language has thrived in spite of there being more powerful and better structured object oriented languages in existence.
C is now such a popular programming language that there have been several descendants from it that are in wide use.

Within procedures, the language's interpretation of the pointers was identical to that of the array variables: a pointer declaration created a cell differing from an array declaration only in that the programmer was expected to assign a referent, instead of letting the compiler allocate the space and initialize the cell.
The language changes during this period, especially around 1977, were largely focused on considerations of portability and type safety, in an effort to cope with the problems we foresaw and observed in moving a considerable body of code to the new Interdata platform.

Extreme Programming (or XP) is a set of values, principles and practices for rapidly developing high-quality software that provides the highest value for the customer in the fastest way possible.
Programers are notoriously optimistic about their capabilities and how easy it will be to add some new feature.
It's true that object-oriented programming and the trend towards increasing reusability is helping to ameliorate the situation, but still, it's not quite enough by itself to overcome the problems raised by increasingly ambitious projects.

Thompson also wrote the B programming language, a precursor to Dennis Ritchie's C programming language, currently one of the world's most commonly used programming languages.
Thompson's style of programming has influenced others, notably in the terseness of his expressions and a preference for clear statements.
Indeed, being the inventor of the C programming language, as well as co-inventor of the UNIX operating system alongside Ken Thompson, Ritchie has earned an important position in the history of the computer industry.
