Bone (corsetry) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In corsetry, a bone is one of the rigid parts of a corset that forms its frame, gives it rigidity, and helps to shape the wearer's body.
Ivory was another luxury material used for the centre front bone, which was known as the busk.
Bones, and the substances used for the purpose, are often generically called boning.

Boning comes in many different kinds and flexibilities, and for new corset makers it can be very confusing to choose the correct type for the project at hand.
This means sewing one bone with the curl of the boning curving in toward your body and the next bone with the curl curving out.
Mainly this boning is used for authenticity, not support, so if you’re looking to make an accurate recreation do your research and make sure the boning you’re using is correct for the time and shape you’re trying to achieve.

Corsets worn for tightlacing are sometimes called training corsets, probably because of tightlacing's alternative names of "waist training" and "corset training".
As tightlacers usually want to achieve and maintain a significant alteration in their body shape, the corsets used are stronger and more rigid, which requires a corset made of stronger fabric (leather is sometimes used) and with less flexible boning.
